Hibernation/sleep issue

So my computer used to be able to go into a hibernating or sleep state to where the power would go off & the fans wouldnt be on. All I would have to do is press enter to get it outta that state. However, since I recently updated the firmware on my WD external drive, it doesnt seem to want to do that anymore. All itll do is simply change the monitor to that amber color, but the rest of the machine is still technically awake.

Is there anyway to get it back to that state that I previously had it so that the energy bill doesnt go back up & my room will stay cooler (although not that much cooler since I live in Texas)? Btw, im running Win7 Pro in case youre curious. Also ive checked the settings the power management area of the control panel & the monitor is set to go off in 5 mins & the whole system is set to go to sleep after 30 mins (supposedly).

If you can find device manager. Go find your WD External Drive, click properties, Go to the power management tab. And uncheck allow this device to wake the machine. Or if nothing else works, just unplug the drive.

Oh trust me, ive already tried unplugging the external drive, but yet the desktop still runs. It has something to do w/ the OS itself. Btw I have no power management tab. The closest I could get was power data under the details tab, but thats it.

What Model is your Drive. My Laptop with windows 7 is comming back tomorow, and i have an external WD drive. Maybe i can find something that might fix your problem tomorow.

EDIT: Also, Look through all the running programs. If when you updated the firmware, some software might have been installed. Check all the recently installed programs for settings that prevent Hibernation/Stand By.

I know this isn't a fix to your current request but I don't bother with hibernation and or sleep. You could just use the shutdown option in your OS. It IS good to power cycle your computer once in a while if not regularly. Power the computer off when you're not using it and most computers do not take very long to boot up.

Yeah, so i could not find anything that would keep my Computer from hibernating/going into stand by. So I would suggest either just shutting down or going though your recently installed programs.

The following is the model #:

I havent really downloaded any extra software except for this stuff called Advanced Systemcare. Supposedly helps in gaming, but all it really did was shut off my music (I had to override that cause as us gamers know, the music helps us go w/ the flow of the game). So therefore ive been thinking of uninstalling it as of recently. Other than that, its been mainly games that ive been downloading/installing.

So heres the weird news, I fixed the issue, however I had to go to msconfig (which ive never had 2 go there ever before) & shut down some stuff that were starting up & apparently 1 of the things that started up in the beginning when my os loaded was causing it not to allow my system to go into sleep/hibernation mode. ever since I toggled some of the items that werent needed to start up my os with, I can now allow my system to go back into that mode again, saving my mom $$ on the electricity bill.

I'm glad you were able to get your computer back to your preferred state. However you could be saving money on the electricity bill by shutting electronics off when you're no longer using them. This includes turning lights off behind you in rooms you aren't using anymore. ;)
