Hello, this is =(e)= HanSomPa and I just got off the Donner server an hour and a half ago. I have a minor complaint to make. The Admin that was on during my game session, from Noon till 3:30 PM Pacific Time made an odd request.

First off let's discuss Ego policy on language. It's well known that swering is not allowed to keep the server PG friendly. Let's think logically here. The whole point is to prevent potential children from hearing some bad words isn't that right? Words that they "shouldn't" know. However, the Admin request not to "censor" as it counted as swearing as well. What is the logic in that? It's not like the kids will be able to understand what we're going to say. Hell, I don't know what that person is going to say. You're telling me it's illegal? A way to release some frustration in a non-obscene way? That's ridiculous. I should be able to censor all I want. They do it in music, movies, etc to keep the content rated for 13 and older. I highly doubt that we get children below 13 on the servers often anyway. Read and discuss, I wanna hear your guys' thoughts on this.

There's nothing to discuss. You can censor all you want. You can even swear on our servers if you want. That's your right and that's your prerogative.

It is also my prerogative and my right to remove you from the server. It is our server, our rules. Just as it is the movie's companies right to censor/swear all they want in their movies, it is our right to control our servers in a fashion we deem best for the general public.

Is it illegal for you to swear? Absolutely not. In the same right, is it illegal for me to remove you from the server for swearing? Absolutely not.

Will children hear worse elsewhere? Of course. But why must we add to it? Your application states you are 17 years old. Well if that's the case, I'm sure your vocabulary is large enough to the point where you don't need to resort to swearing or censoring curse words to get your point across.

Thanks for reading!

What? Sure, it is but that's not the question I'm not questioning my rights.

No, it's your right to uphold the Terms of Service. What am I doing? I am questioning your conditions. You as a moderator can do whatever you want on the server, I as a "member" have the right to question the validity of your moderation. Will I be defying a moderator? Of course not, however I can question whether you are upholding the ToS as it should be upheld. If what you say is even true. Moreover, I'm questioning whether the ToS should be slightly modified or not. Whether what you guys deemed best really is. There is no point in reinforcing things that are illogical.

Am I questioning whether trying to insult others with the intent to avoid infractions or kicks by using censoring appropriate? No, because intent to insult is punishable. However, is censoring itself forbidden or should be forbidden? I am at full liberty to ask that.

I'm all for upholding a friendly environment with a PG rating. I don't believe that censoring your swear words with the intent to let off some steam is violating that.

You seem to be a bit confused. The Terms of Service, termed ToS from here on, is only valid for the game itself. It does not dictate how our public server is run.

When you join an eGO server, you are agreeing to our terms and our rules. It's what we deem to be best for the general public. The ToS dictated by Valve for the Day of Defeat Game has nothing to do with the terms/rules we dictate for our server.

You are correct. You are at liberty to ask any question you may have regarding our rules. I have no issues with that. In fact, if you even want, you can come find me on Ventrilo and we can discuss this even further.

For now though, I will tell you that we do allow certain abbreviated words such as: LoL, ie., ex., haha, ROFL, LAWL, etc.

We even go as far as allowing WTF on our servers. With that said, if you were to say "What the F*CK!", I'll be perfectly honest, I'm going to follow our admining policies and admin the situation.

It is clearly evident what you're trying to say and it is not allowed. That is our rules and our terms for our server. As I stated before, you can follow them if you want, or you can not follow them with consequences.

I'd be more than happy to discuss this with you further on ventrilo. As I said, you have every right to question certain things and to be honest, change only happens when certain things are questioned and challenged. With that said, please come with valid statements and questions.

Thanks!

Alright, I can see the reasoning behind it. Just a question though, don't Ego servers have their own ToS as well as Valve ToS? Otherwise, what rules do the Moderators uphold? I thought that screen that appears when you join(the one you have to press 1 to make it dissappear) was the official server ToS.

We have rules/terms that are agreed upon when connecting to our servers or becoming a member.

Server & Forum Rules

No foul, degrading, or racist remarks.
No inappropriate or disrespectful sprays or names.
All sprays and avatar icons used on eGO servers should be PG-13 rated. No nudity is allowed. Final decisions on what is acceptable are left up to the admins in the server.
No cheating, cheat scripts, barrier jumping, map exploits or hacks of any kind.
No griefing.
No F10 or Alt-F4 jokes.
No advertising in servers.
No names or sprays that advocate or oppose a political figure, political stance, religion or nation.
No website URLs in names, sprays or avatars.
No impersonating admins.
No arguing with admins.
Do not disrupt the server in any way.
Do not pester admins.
Admins have final say in server.
No Drug References
Please note: By becoming a member, you agree to follow and abide by our rules and policies.

All I have to say is this, It does also state in every online game that, Gameplay my change during online play.Which for me also reads we have no control over servers but the people who run them do.

My comment to players who ask "what can we say" I reply you can say anything that I say , you can swear when I swear.
The truth is I swear like a trooper when I am working and you should hear me when I hit my hand with a hammer, but I don't swear ingame for that's my quite time.

Usually, I allow swear words like b**ch, because you hear them on TV and they don't mean something grave. Ofcourse, the only exception is that do not use it against others. By TV, I mean PG 13 films.

Let me rephrase that, they can something like "Life's a b**ch".

The word "bitch" is not allowed on our servers at all, censored or not. Folks, lets keep the discussion here general. If you wish to discuss specific words, feel free to post in eG private, or admin Q&A.

So much discussion has arisen over this topic. It's very simple. Anyone has the ability to say what they want on our servers. Our servers have rules laid out in regards to this. There is no grey area when it comes to swearing. We do not tolerate it on any of our servers. Our admins will use the warn/kick/ban rule to enforce our rules. We have a code of conduct and expect pubs and members alike to abide by these rules.

I know I'm contradicting myself here a bit but perhaps this thread should be closed now.

lol where is the "LIKE" Button when you need one haha.

To me its pretty simple- keep it clean or be gone. I let off steam all the time, but I dont do it with my mic keyed. Or I do it in the rated R room in Vent.

Many players DO come play because they are tired of the verbal abuse and bad language in other servers that dont mind offending the people that choose to come play there.

Having said that, a slip here or there is acceptable, even normal, but we need to watch out for the kids and for the people that just plain dont want to hear it, as that is our job.

My 2 cents,

This. And of course the minors are the first concern, but for me atleast the clean and mature gaming means more fun. The random slip time by time may entertain but no more.

Like London said the thing with a hammer, mine would've been when one of my teeth cracked.. Would've made a seasoned sailor cover his ears..

If I were in game and I keyed my mic and said:

"You are a very unpleasant person with the character of a poltroon. I find your behavior to be lacking in manners, and your intelligence to be infinitesimal."

I would expect to be warned. Nay verily, as an eGO member they may even kick me.

Why? I didn't swear. Of course not I never swear (Liar liar pants on fire!). I was disrespectful.

If I said "you piece of ****. You ******* ***-****", am I being less disrespectful?

I most certainly am not.

Ponder this as you have a very pleasant day.

It seems as though the OP is splitting hairs - yes, VALVe's ToS apply in so far as cheating. You Automatically agreed to this when you agreed to the Steam Subscriber Agreement (recently revised). They can suggest Codes of Conduct, but in game, unless on an official VALVe server, it is neither enforced or enforcable. That's where the eGO servers' ToS comes in to play - that menu you must agree to by hitting 1. in game so it goes away and (although honestly I've never actually scrolled down, so I could be totally wrong here) possibly on the MOTD as well. Essentially you automatically agree to eGO rules when you sign on to the server, where a Code of Conduct is most definitely enforced. Don't try to sidestep with minor distinctions of both a pedantic and picayune nature. Keep it simple. Obey the rules and when in doubt just don't do it. Would you say it to a three year old?

My two cents. :)
