Power supply ?

So one of the guys in the community needs a new gaming machine. I always seem to have the hardest time with the stats on the power supply since ive never really been that good on the real fine specs of power supplies. His price range is $1k-1500. Im thinking about getting him anywhere from a 650-800w psu. His machine will not be overclocking & he will only be getting 1 video card (he can always go buy another if he wants to go beastly).

Any thoughts/suggestions on brand & the 80+ rating would be helpful. Im thinking more along the lines of Corsair (I have that in my machine right now) or possibly Cooler Master, but will consider others.
 
This Seasonic has gotten great reviews, and is fully modular which is always a plus.


I went with This in my build, and it's working like a dream. Non modular, but a great rating.

If you are heartset on a corsair, this AX 650 is a great choice.

Corsair HX 750
^what I use for my single factory ocd gtx 670 and non overclocked(yet)i5 2500k
slightly overkill for a single gpu build, but im leaving room for the future!

Seasonic or Corsair are good power supply manufacturers. Either choice would be good but the important stuff to look for if you don't have a limited budget is the platinum or gold certified power supplies. These ratings are for power efficiency. You end up paying more the higher the rating is so pick a power supply you have the budget for with efficiency in mind and most importantly has enough power to cover all of your hardware and future upgrades or expansions. I usually buy a power supply with future hardware upgrades or additions in mind. Add up all of the wattage use for the hardware you are planning to buy and then give yourself some padding when deciding how much power you need.

edit - also modular power supplies are VERY convenient since the cables all can be disconnected at the power supply so you technically only need to do cable management at the time you are building the computer. If the power supply ever fails, you can disconnect everything and swap the new modular power supply in and plug it all back in!

Newegg has some nice deals going on right now on psu units.
 
Corsair makes amazing PSUs. Also for only one video card pretty much no matter what it is you should be fine with anything in 650w range. The AX650 is really nice.
 
As far as wattage use that's also going down, which is evident in the 670 vs 460
 
I've been using the following PSU since Jan 2009 and it's been rock solid...

I'd recommend a Thermaltake TR2 750. It's cheap, it works very well and it's modular.
