----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Skill is important (according to lukeirish), but by me analyzing life as it is, I have come to conclusion that everything is based on Luck.

Mostly Everything is by chance, think about it. You got a into a good university. That means you are lucky enough to:

Get decent education => Lucky to be born in a good family who could afford it.

And...

(Example removed, Read Samolito's Inspiring post)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. For all of you who thinks you have failed you're life and/or go as low as you can go. Think about this: Chances of being born is 1:10000000. You hit the Jackpot! You win the epic swim race for life! This should be an achievement. You should be celebrating and we still do! (You're birthday). So why must you think so negatively? You should be happy that you EXIST.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Formula For luckiness is:

Luckiness = Good things that happen/Bad things that happen.

Can be used to calculate your luckiness in a day, a month, or a year or your whole lifetime. (Remember to also count you being alive, you having a decent computer, you having a family.)

If L > 1, you're lucky.
L < 1, you're unlucky.

Example:

Let Luckiness be X

8/2 = 4

4 > 1

Conclusion, Very Lucky.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. The definition of selfishness.

I have a bag of chips that I will not share out. How is that selfish? Just because i'm hungry so what if I don't share it out? You're selfish for begging other people for food in the first place. You're selfish because you want things that are free and not earned with hard work.

(Parents/You work hard to earn money)

=> Parents => Read point 1

=> (Assuming) Hard Work => Decent Job => Luck

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. If you wanna be good in life, then you gotta appreciate it.

You will not achieve anything if you keep saying 'oh, this job sucks all i do is flip burgers' or 'Damn, everyone ignores me!'.

First of all, Everything has it's own benefits, even bad things do have benefits. (I know it sounds quite cliche but when I thought about this, it actually kind of changed the way I think of life'.

For example:
Flipping burgers
-Train Arm Strength
-Gain Cooking/work experience
-Gives you fun goals such as trying to flip 6 burgers at once.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. Tangible items only make happy for the first few minutes/hours/days/weeks. Never months or years.

Instead of aiming for a tangible object such as a new I-Phone or Computer. Why not set a skill goal? Why not learn how to ride a bike within the month or a unicycle (what i'm doing now) if you've mastered it. You'll gain a skill that would last almost a lifetime. Skills will not be replaced, thrown away or possibly forgotten. Recaps will help you remember your forgotten skill.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. You do not want to be rich.

No, Being rich ruins the purpose of life. Being rich makes it difficult to set goals. If you're rich, you want you get. That's no fun. It's better if you get what you earn. It makes you appreciate all the things you did to achieve it.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8. Be a fun person.

It is easier for people to approach you when you're humorous, the world needs more of these people. Imagine a world full of people who only talks about boring business and politics. It will be like dull faces and everything would seem black and white.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

9. Maths and Science is dangerous.

Imagine a world without math. Yes, there will be no computers or phones. But are they worth the cost of war? The reason is simple. Math makes nuclear weapons. Maths kills. I'd rather live in a world with no understanding and just enjoy it than have technology controlling our lives. Music and language are good subjects to learn. It's how people express themselves.

You do not need math to produce medicine? I lived in Hong Kong where you can choose to take Normal medication or Chinese Medication. Chinese Medication is basically a mix of herbs, tea flakes and possibly insects. And it did the trick (Apart from the disgusting taste that lasts for days, compared to tablets and capsules, they do not have any bad side-effects - Always had trad. med) Works all the time. Not taking sides or anything. How do they come up with these kind of medicine? Trial and Error. Its not about understanding but trying out new things and putting into action.
How do cavemen discover fire? It's not like they know that you need Oxygen, Fuel and heat to produce it in the first place. They use trail and error.

And that's where you thought wrong about technology to survive such as production of food. We are now producing foods containing MSG preservatives etc... Ruining health. We put pesticides and herbicides to grow food. This is madness. Even birds and insects won't touch them, why do humans happily eat foods that even mother nature itself rejects it.

For disagreement for this idea read Tee Hee Hee's post

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10. Take risks.

Sounds simple right? I doubt it. Its difficult to face a challenge without seeing the consequences of it.

Say you're gonna go ask a girl/guy out.

Whats the worse thing that could possibly happen to you?

Death? 80 years of bad luck? Disabled? Guilt burned onto you?

No, Get rejected.

So what? you fell to the ground. Okay you understand. Now stand back up. Learn your mistake and move on.

Unless you're risking your life by joining the army and put in the front line. You should always try to take risks. There are always more good outcomes than bad ones by taking risks.

Like I said earlier - Trial and Error

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

11. How I Manage stress and physical pain.

Stress - the invisible pain. How do I handle it?

Just close your eyes. Imagine you are sitting on a flying couch, watching yourself stressed like a sitcom. Then point at yourself and laugh. Works for me all the time. You don't like being laughed at right? It makes yourself the competition and makes you want to do better.

Or

Imagine your body is a huge gigantic robot and then imagine you being the little who is controlling your body watching through extreme HD screen. You'll feel everything is distant. The pain is affected on your body but not the little you.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

12. Religion is an effective placebo (Could be offensive, i'll remove if it is) (I'm non-religious, only opinions)

All those talks about God, Hell, Heaven, miracles etc... Are just placebos. They make you think about consequences and/or set unrealistic achievements. Things about hell and the devil are only threats or warnings. Whereas heaven and miracles are projected sense of hope. There have been no scientific proofs that these things exist. They are only used to make one seem more powerful, more authority. This could potentially be dangerous.

When I think of religion, I think of a small child with his/her parents. Parents will warn the child not do something or they'll be punished. Telling him/her that he/she will become a super-star when he/she grows-up.

To be continued/fixed...

geez another thing i am in debt with.... thanks for reminding me haha

I agree with everything except for this: "Lucky to be born in the right body. "

Because I was always a small/skinny guy all my life. Brittle bones, broke same leg twice :S.
Low immune system and would get sick easily by catching a virus or cold almost every few moths. Had/have problems with my back. But when doctors told me when I was 12-13 that I need an operation on my back or I will be disabled by the age of 30-40 it opened my mind and I decided to change a few things.

Changes my diet from eating crap to eating good food. Changes everything I drank to drinking milk and now my bones are extra strong and my weight is not regular compared to may body size because my bones area heavy and I weight just as much as an overweight person. xD

And now I am 20 and I have a first degree black belt in karate, 2 first place medals in swimming in my town/county. 2 degrees: one in catering and one in photography and finishing this year my masters degree in photography.

And now when I go back to Russia my old friends don't recognise me because I look completely different :)

But yes I definitely agree with being luck to have good parents. I lived in Russia until the age of 12 and my mum took me to UK an I lived here ever since. Gave me a good and exiting life and now my aim is to give it back by buying her a house next summer in Lanzarote, because it is her dream place to live :)

I don't believe in religion but I believe in Karma and this is how I look at life and a lot is is based on luck and doing good things! I have been organising charity events every few moths for 4 years now and through this I met people that helped me a lot in life! Through this I went to work as a photographer in Afghanistan for the army. And this place is definitely is based on luck. You can be in the wrong place at the wrong time and lose your life.

One thing that I will remember for the rest of my life is what a local cook said in Afghanistan and our interpreter translated: "One day you take a photograph of a person and the next day all you have is a photograph of that person"

So yeah luck is everything in our life's.
And I am luck to meet such nice people in eGO and spend my evenings relaxing and talking to friends all around the world :)

Aaa man I can ramble about this all day xD

P.S. nice thread Mush :)

I don't agree with this. I can't say that everything is based on luck as I don't believe in it. I think if you work hard at something then you can reach it.

I majorly disagree with two of these in particular...

1. Is there anything that is actually random, no just think for a second. Not that we don't have enough information to work out but actually random. Just think of human behaviour, our complex amazing and often seemingly random decisions are all a consequence of our personalities which are themselves a product of a combination of our genes and experiences. Our genes aren't random at all and our first experiences are defined by them and lead us to create ourselves and continue having more experiences defined and influenced by previous experience.

Even things that appear random like coin tosses or weather, its not an intrinsic randomness or luck that makes things happen, its events leading up to it...we just don't have the tools to measure all those influences and compute the result.

I'm just not sure that other than at a quantum level there really is much luck/chance/randomness in everyday life to be honest.

9. Maths and science are dangerous, well yeah, but not as dangerous as living without it. Take medicine...the drugs we give can kill too, surgery isn't risk free, medicine is fraught with danger yet the benefits of all that science and technology still far far outweigh the risks/costs. I wholeheartedly believe the same of science in general, people will have wars and kill eachother whatever level of sophistication the weapons are, look at the crusades just for one major example. Maths and science enrich our lives and save many peoples lives so that they can continue enjoying it.

I don't know about you but the more I discover about this amazing, complex, often bizarre world the more I appreciate the wonder of it; and without science or maths that would be a lot less wonderful. A square, flat earth wouldn't excite me nearly as much. We would also almost all need to be farmers to keep up food production, no technology means no mechanised farming so all stop being artists, musicians etc and get back to the fields just to support yourselves.

Anyway, just my little thoughts, hope they give you food for some more thought too :D

Sorry to be a nay-sayer but alternative medicines do not work...they often appear to, but none that are still called alternative have ever been show to be more effective than plaecbo (ie taking a sugar pill or doing nothing). If they did work they would become part of actual medicine, like aspirin has (made from the bark of a willow tree) or antibiotics which the first of which were based on penicillin which was found by mistake. You do need scientific process and due diligence to create effective, safe medicine.

Trial and error is science, lots of scientific discoveries are just trial and error from curious minds (they just happen to document what they tried and what the errors were). Science moves on by discovering what doesn't work, what does and tries to find out why. I think this is definitely a very good thing for the world!
