Hello all of you :) I play guitar. I started playing when i was 15 years old, And to this day, i do not understand a lot of the music theory. I have written some songs, but sometimes when i write songs, i get stuck, like. "Which chord comes next?" and other things like that. So, I would like to know if there are any of you here who play an instrument and have a firm grip on music theory. And if you do, if you could please share. :) Thank you.

I've heard there was a secret chord
That David played, and it pleased the Lord
But you don't really care for music, do you?
It goes like this
The fourth, the fifth
The minor fall, the major lift
The baffled king composing Hallelujah

:P

But on a serious note, have you heard of the I, IV, V?

Pretty much just take the key you're playing in and take the first, the fourth and the fifth in that key and play them together.

Check that link out, it should help you understand what I mean.

Also, as a disclaimer: I do not play guitar so don't come down hard on me if anything I say is incorrect, but I'm not musically dumb ;)

using the tonic key chord, the sub-dominant (IV) chord and the dominant (V) chord always helps

My favourite song!

But yeah, when I jam with my friends: the girls is a vocalist and the guy is also a guitarist. We would use a looping system and would just listen to her sing and the beat the we previously made by beat boxing, and just jam away and the best layer on the looping system after we finish gets tweaked and then we record the best version :)

I dint go to music school for guitar but have been playing for 5 years. And I don't even remember how to read notes. Everything ether by ear or chords.

I've been playing trombone for the past 13 years and I still don't understand theory. I was first chair in my school's good jazz band too (I got by on talent and experience. Being able to play well helps).

Chord progression?
Harmony?
Being in tune?

What are these things you speak of?

What I'm trying to come across is... yes chord progressions, and maybe making a melody to the chords. or maybe even making like.. a 'lead' part, or another musical piece to go along with the chords.
