Hi, do the eGO forums support the Tapatalk smartphone app? If not, can I suggest its inclusion? I'm thinking of buying the app and having more forum sites supporting it would help its usefulness.

Pardon if this is has already been talked about or is a sore subject. I tried searching for "Tapatalk" in thread titles but didn't find anything.

Unfortunately it doesn't, as I just searched it on my phone and it came up with no results.

This would be a great suggestion though. Surprised a community this large doesn't use it already.

Tapatalk is a smartphone app that provides a more user-friendly interface for posting to and reading forums. It's "enabled" on a site by installing their API on it; clients then connect via that API instead of through the normal web interface. Apparently it's free for sites, but the client app itself costs money.

Here's a link to the dropbox, post your suggestion there if you want those in Leadership who can make such a decision to consider it. They'll also be able to explain why they would or would not consider such a tool.

My guess is it will come down to what is most cost-efficient for the majority of the community. You never know though, best of luck!

I've actually dropbox-suggested this already, a while back when I was a e/eG, and a reply back was that they were working on it.

And to elaborate on what it is: Basically, Tap-a-talk is a app for mobile devices that allows users to navigate forums easier than, say, Safari on iPhone.

Why would we add support for this, Their are free alternatives.

Such as checking the user agent and displaying a specific theme based on the useragent.

I suggested something like this years ago. It got shot down, and for fairly good reason. It did involve putting some stuff into the likely massive database that Edgegamer's forum runs off. At the time it was also not believed to be the most secure of programs.

It doesn't have the same speed as an app, plus vB3 doesn't have a mobile theme that is as good as vB4's.

Well if we had a lighter theme that didn't load 200 images at once, this wouldn't be an issue.

One question is how hard Tapatalk integration would be compared to developing a custom stylesheet for mobile. Regardless, Tapatalk will never be an open and free client like web browsers. On the other hand, no custom stylesheet will ever compete in UX with a native app.

There's a reason why popular websites such as IMDB and CNN release native apps. They COULD just make mobile versions of their sites, and they do. But mobile sites look and behave horribly compared to native apps.

All you need to do to add it to the forum is install a plugin and add the site to their database. And there are free apps that can access tapatalk forums.

I'm positive that there are mobile themes already made that we could alter to our design style.
