Dear TF2 Team - Let's talk competition

Not a bad idea. I personally would not use it since I don't play competitive, but I have tried a lobby twice. So this may get me interested in trying a competitive game again, only cause I don't have to go through the tf2lobby stuff. #lazy

This may work. However, TF2 in of itself is not a competetive actvity. It was pretty much only made for recreation purposes, and I doubt that Valve would implement something like this.

Then again, who knows?

In design, yes, TF2 is pretty much exclusively just for casual, ridiculous gaming.

But in a nutshell, TF2 has become Valve's testing ground for new marketing ideas and or game ideas. So I wouldn't really be that shocked to see Valve do this.

Plus Valve does a really good job at listening to the community's demands. (except Ep. 3.) So I would think they would at least consider this idea. It'd net them some nice cash and appeals to a pretty big part of the community.

But exactly how big is the competitive community compared to the recreational community?

Well its always growing and there are players who are interested in comp skill level play but don't have time to put into tournaments like myself. This could bring that level of skill play to such players and keep their interests in the game for when they grow bored/too good for pubs.

The problem with pubs is that everyone's doing their own thing and there is no communication which would cause the team to win.

It sounds good on paper, but its A LOT harder than you would think. Tons of 6's players have been asking Valve to put in money in prize pools, host tournaments, etc, but they haven't gave us the love that we've been asking for. The best that I've seen them do was to advertise the recent i46 LAN where mix^ and LG went to go up against the other Euro teams. I think they also put some prize money in, but that's really been it.

Sure, they do give out the Highlander Medals, but, based off of personal experience, I've always found Highlander to be bland with nothing exciting ever happening compared to the 6v6 format. It would be nice to implement this in to TF2 seeing as they already are supporting Dota 2 and CS:GO in terms of their competitive style.

But exactly how big is the competitive community compared to the recreational community?

ESEA has about 68 teams sign up for S12 and this Season of UGC Highlander has at least 400 teams signed up from multiple countries. In terms of players for 6v6, if we take an average of 8 players per team, it would be about 544 players there. For Highlander, according to Moose, there are about 5,000 players there. Also take into fact that I only took the amount of one 6's league when there are other popular ones, such as OzFortress (AU), ETF2L (EU), Asia Fortress , and many others. So, there are a nice amount of players who do play Competitive TF2, but the scene isn't just as well known as it should be.
