Looking for some input on iron sights in DOD:S. Being a newbie, I find the iron sights to be more of a nuisance than a help - with the Garand they are ok, where as with the Kar98k they are neigh impossible to aim with as the sight is so small and narrow. That being said, I find the sniper rifles wonderful to use.

Another topic and issue I have is with recoil. I found out quickly you can't hip shoot with an MG since you will shoot straight up after half a second and then have the enemy laugh at you and shoot you in the faith. With the SMG's, I find that you almost have to drag your mouse DOWNWARDS in order to compensate for the kick that happens.

Your thoughts on the matter(s)?

The iron sight don't increase the accuracy, so I don't use them. They just provide a small zoom, which is really useless. unless you're in Strand, imo. If you try to use iron sights in Donner or Avalanche, then you'll be killed. It takes a loooooooooong time just for you to position it.

I dislike the iron sights, I find them very... obtrusive to my field of vision. There are reskins out there, not that I would know where to get a good one. I'm not good with a rifle to begin with anyway...

AS for hip fire - On a MG, its best done with the MG42 rather then the .30 because of the higher rate of fire, more bullets before the recoil takes it too high. Crouching before you fire is pretty much a necessity, and you will have to pull on your mouse to control it. If you have a mouse that you can control the DPI turning it up can help you not have to drag as much. If you don't, I would recommend the Logitech G500. It is a solid gaming mouse that goes on sale on ebay and amazon often. For a better opinion on hip firing the MG class, talk to Chuck Norris or Spartacus_Legolas.

For both support class weapons, if you have to run and gun, use short 2-4 bullet bursts. Aim low, and let the recoil lead the bullets to the chest and head. If you have the opportunity, crouch before you fire, it wont move much and is easier to control.

Going from an avid iron sight hater, this is something that i've been experimenting with. I think the iron sights turn your gun into a make shift sniper rifle. What this means is that you can aim down the sight and walk around corners. This will allow you to get a shot off before the enemy can react.

The iron sights on the normal rifles are very annoying in my opinion, you could get as accurate when you do hip fire so why not use it?

For the sniper rifle, I do agree with you, although I've only used it once or twice, the sight for it is absolutely wonderful and very useful.

For the SMG's, I mostly use the shift button to steady it.

The shift button??? What is this new thing I am hearing of?!

I love me some iron sights. I prefer the K98 iron sights, reason being, one hit they are dead and because you move so slow sighted its tough to get 2 shots with the garand against a formidable opponent.

I assume he uses shift to crouch, like I do. Crouching reduces recoil and improves accuracy. You get used tot he recoil after a while. Dont try to "Rambo" with the MG, right click to set up the tripod either on an object or in the prone position. BTW, I dont use iron sights either.

I find using the single shot on support more useful than the iron sights on the rifles. IMHO.

Wewo, why don't you use CRTL for crouching? Isn't it better? What key do you use for sprinting?

I am becoming more proficient with both rifles- during normal run and gun activity, I do not use them. but while you are in cover, if you need to peek a corner or look in a window, it is very useful. Standing out in the open, I would not recommend it. As far as MG 'rambo' style shooting, I'll leave it to those who have fun with it. If I see 2 weapons on the ground, a BAR and an MG, I'm picking up the BAR. The support weapons DO have quite a bit of recoil, but I too have a Logitech G500, and I have my DPI set to about 4000- I dont have to drag down too much for lengthy bursts, but also I usually shoot in bursts of 4-8. Not to mention, if you right click your mouse with support weapons it turns it to single shot. I have practiced and practiced with these shots, and it basically turns it into a rifle. Fairly accurate, and you would be surprised how many one shot kills you can get. So for instance, I will take a couple of shots at a long target, then right click again as I go around a corner and shoot someone in the face with a triple tap.

And dont forget the rifle grenades :) bounce one on the ground in front of you and immediately press E to pick it up. count to 3 and throw it. It is a VERY effective tool to have and use well... with any grenade, the more you cook it, the less likely your enemy will be to pick it up and throw it back at you. (which I also love to do)

2pennies,

I too use shift to crouch, and CTRL to sprint, for me the shift key is closer and more comfortable, which is what I want when Im shooting.

Shift - Crouch
Sprint - E (right next to W so yeah...)
Crouch - X

Works well.

Also bound Mouse 3 to !medic, and put the "USE" key as Q

I use iron-sights. You need to learn how to take advantage of them. They allow you make much more accurate shots with higher chance of hit registration. But you need to know how to properly use the iron-sights. If you sit in corners or wait for people with iron-sights, as you said, then it is useless. Because it ends up slowing you down and decreasing your field of vision. However, if you see someone from far far away and you need to take a shot I usually bring up my iron-sights. Let me give you an example. Suppose you see the tracer rounds of the mg on mid window on donner. You can drag yourself around a corner with an ironsight to kill the mg. If you did not use the ironsight for that shot it is likely that you would miss it as it is from far away. Another example is that if I see somebody running across the screen from far away I bring up the ironsight to take a shot. Basically the point is that you bring up the ironsight only when you know someone is there or if you see someone from far away. Otherwise you use rifle as a regular rifle. But it makes a highly noticable difference if you properly take advantage of the iron-sight.

Now with the support class. You definitely need to learn how to use semi-auto mode. For the most part I play with auto-mode on my support class. But occasionally I need to switch to semi-auto mode. It makes a huge difference. You can take long distance shots and kill people in two shots or sometimes even one. The support double ups as a miniture rifle and so you should take advantage of that ability. When you play with support you should mainly play indoor environments but when you need to go out into open areas the semi-auto mode allows you to more efficiently play in such situations. I think most people ignore the semi-auto mode altogether but they should not, they should take their time learning how to play with it and see the big difference the support class makes when it is on semi-auto mode.

I only use the iron sights on the M1 on long distance shots. They slow you down and block your view too much. If you want to Rambo with the MG make sure you crouch before you shoot and start pulling your mouse down almost immediately. With support class make sure to crouch whenever you shoot (unless its close quarters).

Iron sights for peeking out corners where you know they'll come at medium-long range, as well as taking shots on people far away, obviously. The added zoom helps tons.

Ramboing with the MG just takes practice and getting use to. I rarely set up with the MG anymore unless I have to play defense, and anyone here can tell you I use MG 75% of the time if its available, even on 1v1s. Especially if that 1v1 is against Meg

It's been very interesting reading this, feel I've learnt a few things!
