So I just recently started learning American Sign Language. Do we have anything in the forums who happens to be certified or possibly have a bachelors in the field by chance? Maybe you have a friend that requires sign language. I would like to know how long it took you to understand the general basics of signing.

That's a very cool endeavor Pillar! I have regular customers that communicate with sign language and I very much wish I could sign back and forth with them. I have been out of school for a long time but that is one thing I really want to make time for someday.

Best of luck!

EDIT: (forgot the whole reason I posted) My boss took an intro to sign language class as part of his business degree and as for the basics he said he learned enough to make small talk and ask if they gave a sign that he didn't understand. So I would guess for basic function a minimum of one semester.

I went to school at RIT in New York and have dated someone deaf (cochlear implant though so idk if you consider her "deaf" or not)

I consider my self conversational in sign, im not the best with it though. It took me about 5-6 months of somewhat regular interaction to get there. My biggest hardship (still) with ASL are signs that are very close to each other --- examples (orange, old and ice cream) all have very similar movements right around the mouth area.

Also, as you might though theres ASL (real sign) and ESL (english sign). Most hearing signers learn ESL -- so for example youd sign (do you want to go to the beach now), well in ASL youd sign (beach you want to go *point at arm for time* now)

Best of luck with ASL!
