How to play TF2?

Make hats.
In all seriousness, just find a class you like, find the weapon that fits your playstyle, then practice. You'll get the hang of it in no time!

Kinda lame after playing COD for years....

After playing COD a bit on a friend's PS3, I find that the underlying difference between games like CoD, and to a lesser extent, Battlefield, from games like TF(2) and other traditional team-based deathmatch games, especially ones with set classes, is that CoD does not emphasize teamwork. Some people deny that, but really, think about it. In CoD, as long as you're good at hiding around a corner and shooting someone in the face with a shotgun, you yourself can survive. As long as one person is alive, you can complete the goal by setting the bomb using stealth or something. Whereas, basically every single goal in TF2 requires teammates covering you. Maybe five players will get on a point, and only two will survive capping it. However, if only those two had tried, the point would not have been captured. In Team Fortress 2, you need to do what's best for your team, not yourself. Don't rush into the fray without backup, or you'll be waiting to respawn during the next push. Don't play a class just because it's your favorite if your team is lacking players in a certain class. Act as a part, not as a whole.

COD is an hardcore game based on individuality as Zeus said.
TF2 is team work.
Class based game = Work each class 1hr and see what fits you.
I'm more demo, but I love playing engi and medic.

People jiggle more in TF2. I had a friend join after only playing CoD as well, and he kept complaining about how people move too much.

Try offline practice for a little bit and then get to the real game.

Being a medic is a good way to start the game. You don't get much combat, but you'll see the map and how people play.

Soldier is also another good starter class. In time you will learn about rocket jumping, which is important.

As an engineer, think about the placement of your buildings and watch out for spies.

As a pyro, try to be sneaky on the enemies and always extinguish burning teammates.

As a demoman, make traps with sticky bombs and your grenades can be use to get enemies and engi buildings that you can't see like around corners. Use the environment to your advantage to deter, corner, or surprise enemies

The only thing about Online play; never play spy on it. The bots automatically turnand shoot at you whenever you drop your disguise.

I usually try to play whatever class the team needs me to be. IMO, I think it's fun to play all classes, because they all have their own special perks.

lol because CoD definitely transfers well into TF2.

CoD = point and shoot, get free kill

TF2 = Men tank rockets.

You mean offline? Also, what I've noticed in new players is when they get DR for the spy, as soon as they cloak with it, they think no one can knows they're there. And, for disguise, they think no one knows they're a spy. Stormhawk, try an easy class to play. The easiest class is probably soldier, it's a bit like CoD, I guess, where the rocket is like an RPG, except that it's your main weapon. The shotgun, think of it as like a shotgun from CoD. Just two things you need to learn about TF2: teamwork and most of your weapons don't instantly kill the enemy. Contact me on steam and I can give you some starter items if you need them.

Also, classes are more balanced. Heavy is powerful and has a lot of health, but is slow.
Scout is fast and evasive, but has low health.
Another thing: You shouldn't use: The Short Circuit, The Razorback (spies will just shoot you in the face), and some other bad weapons.

Turn on damage markers and sounds right away, they are your best friend. If you really want to know how close an enemy is to dying, memorize their health when over-healed and regularly. Makes it much easier to know whether or not to run or stay and fight. I recommend doing what everyone else said and find a class that fits you best. :]

Well, I don't think there is such a thing as a bad weapon. It all just depends on how well you can use it. The Short Circuit is wonderful for getting rid of stickies, while the razorback does block a backstab. I know the Razorback has saved me a bunch of times, haha.

There are plenty of videos on youtube explaining how to play TF2, and what to do.

Phlubs, on a slightly unrelated note, your sig makes me laugh every time I see it.

OH! Weapons to add to the DO NOTE USE LIST: The Direct Hit (until you get really good at aiming), the scottish resistance (regular sticky launcher is just better) and the buffalo steak sandvich (it locks you to your melee weapon. Only use it if you're messing around).
