So recently, I've been thinking about getting a Sega Dreamcast, but I'd like to know exactly what I'd be getting into beforehand. Does anybody have a Dreamcast? What are the pros and cons? Does the browser still work? What are the best games? Any other advice?

It would be greatly appreciated if somebody could answer these questions.

I bought a Sega Dreamcast in 2000, right as it was going out of business. Love that thing still.

Pro's:
Severely under rated system
Several Great Games
A small list of games can still be played online
Can get the console dirt cheap

Con's:
The system is long dead
Online is via modem (obsolete), getting the broadband adapter is expensive.
Only 5-6 games can still be played online, some via private servers
If buying online, risk of games not being legit copies is higher
The better games will be more expensive (good luck finding power stone)

Dreamcast was a great system. I love mine and am glad I got one. Best games (of the ones I did buy) include:

Crazy Taxi
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Soul Calibur
Phantasy Star Online
Sega GT
Sonic Adventure

Other great games (that even I couldn't find)
Power Stone 1&2
Skies of Arcadia (actually played the Gamecube Import)
Jet Set Radio
Starlancer

That's the best I can do off the top of my head. I'm going to have to dust my dreamcast off now and play it a bit now that we've talked about it.

The other good news is a lot of the great Dreamcast games were released on other consoles. A bunch of games got re-released on XBLA, Skies of Arcadia and Phantasy Star Online had excellent Gamecube ports, and there are a few others that came out or are coming out but they escape me at the moment.

Well except for Skies of Arcadia. It is arguably one of my favorite RPGs ever and the rumor is it is getting an HD release on XBLA. Can't wait for that!

Sorry for double post but I forgot about Shenmue. Don't forget Shenmue.

Completely mixed on this game. It is unique, there is absolutely nothing like it. Play at your own risk. If you like it you won't be able to finish it, as it was designed to be a trilogy and North America never saw Shenmue 2 (it might have come out in Japan) and Shenmue 3 is supposed to come out around the same time as Half Life 2 episode 3.

I personally do have a Dreamcast and love it! Although I only have Crazy Taxi but I'd say it's a good console and Crazy Taxi in my opinion is by far the best taxi game I've ever played.

As Spitfire said it's long dead and most of the time you'll end up playing by yourself or with your family.

Thanks for the advice. I kinda expected that there wouldn't really be any online stuff on it these days, but I'm not fussed about that. I found a bundle on eBay that's around ?40 that comes with a console, cables, controller, VMU, Sonic Adventure, Hydro Thunder, Virtua Tennis, and Silent Scope, and I'm thinking of buying it. (but I'll have to wait till Saturday)

Also I found Jet Set Radio on sale shrink-wrapped brand new for ?4.50, and I'm gonna buy that with it because it looks bloody awesome. Later on I might get Shenmue and the other games mentioned, although Shenmue seems to cost at least ?25 these days.

From what I've heard of the console, it seems a damn shame that it didn't do as well as the other consoles. I wonder what this generation would be like had SEGA kept in the hardware business?

Ahh when will shenmue 3 ever come for us??? Still wanting my ending to the epic story produced in the first 2. Such fond memories of playing both shenmues on dreamcast. The system was truly great. Still waiting for sega to get back into hardware. Grew up on sega rather than nintendo, so im partial :)

SEGA!

Wow, the Dreamcast.. makes me think of when I was younger. I used to play House Of Dead a lot. It's basically a shooter you'll find in the arcade were you pick up the gun and see a crosshair on the screen. It was really cool because you had different ways of ending every map.
Damn, Crazy Taxi, Sonic... so much fun.

I miss it :( Too bad my brother broke it on me.

And indeed, Sega should've continued making consoles. I REALLY hope they'll come up with a Dreamcast that will beat the Xbox + PlayStation.

Oh and spitfire'd, you forgot 'Out Trigger'!

The SEGA DREAMCAST was a great system, but the controller killed it.

I had many, many, many late nights playing Soul Caliber and a UFC game.

I've had a Sega Dreamcast all while growing up (which was years ago :P )..it was a blast until the newer inventions/games came along (Xbox, Wii for example)

Games I liked to play on it:

NBA 2k
NFL 2k
Trickstyle
Toy Commander
Crazy Taxi

and probably a few others..

But now when I try to set it all back up after years of inactive use, I think my controller(s) or something might've died as nothing will work. >.<

OK, so I think I worked out a decent set-up.

Console + Controller + Chu Chu Rocket from local secondhand shop
Extra controller and VMU from Amazon
Games from Amazon and Chilloutgames:
Virtua Tennis
Quake III Arena
Crazy Taxi
Jet Set Radio
Phantasy Star Online

Altogether this comes to a total of ?59.87. I'm planning to buy on Monday as my secondhand shop is closed Sundays. Any advances on that current choice? I'm excited :D

That's a great list. Jet Set Radio is one of my favorite games (ever). I would look into Power Stone 2 and Soul Calibur as well if you have friend(s) to play with.

Oh wow, so I just found out that Power Stone 2 copies are a bit of a rarity nowadays. Haha, the cheapest I could find it for was around $50.00. I still have my copy in my closet, never knew it was worth anything until now. :O
