For the past week or so, I haven't been able to hear sounds or people from Ventrilo or in game through my headset; they only come through my speakers. I'm using one of these:

because my laptop has only one port for headphones and microphones.

Music from iTunes play fine though my headset, and so do other sounds, but Ventrilo and Source games play through the laptop speakers.

Any help? I've checked my drivers and updated them, and messed with the in game settings, but to no avail.

Check to make sure your sound settings are configured properly. In ventrilo and your games have sound settings that allow you to direct to which sound device you'd like to use. Most commonly it is set to default sound device which means it will use whatever the operating system is using. If you're using Windows 7, there is a sound option in the system tray (lower right side of your screen) and you can right click it and choose playback devices or whatever option you have based on drivers that allows you to set which device you'd like to use (headset, speakers, etc.). Once you're in that control panel you can select your preference as default.

In Ventrilo, go to the setup button on the right side and you can choose (voice tab at top) which output and input device you would like to use. Confirm these are set properly. If you want to use your headset for Ventrilo then you will need to select your headset for both unless your microphone is separate from your headset obviously.

If these options do not fix the issue I would attempt to use a different USB port assuming it is a USB headset, and you could also check the device manager to see if there is a driver conflict with your headset. This does happen sometimes and it just requires you to unplug the headset and right click the driver within device manager and uninstall it. Once it is uninstalled you can plug it back in and the operating system should auto detect the headset and install the drivers for it again. To access the device manager right click on My Computer or Computer (whichever text you see based on the OS you have installed) and choose properties. In Windows 7 you will select Device Manager which is displayed on the left side of that window.

I hope this information resolves the sound issue you are having but if it does not resolve your issue, please respond with what you're experiencing after attempting these fixes. Thank you!
