hl2.exe has stopped working

I have been cursed by the gods of gaming. Everytime I attempt to join a multiplayer server TF2 closes and leaves me with an error message saying: hl2.exe has stopped working. I've consulted the google with little progress and I'd like to post a thread here before contacting anybody from steam support. If ANYONE would like to help me out, I'd be in your debt, Thanks!
 
Did you try to de-frag your cache files? I encountered this problem yesterday, and de-fragged my cache files. Now tf2 is running swell again.
 
Call Gaben and tell him to fix it.

Or reinstall.
 
I feel your pain, I hot the hl2.exe crash error a couple of weeks ago, just out of the blue. As you have done I Googled the he!! out of the issue. Defraged, verified, uninstalled, ran through all my drivers ect.
Nothing did the job, I was able to join Mann vs. Machine games but not multiplayer. And if I played a M vs. M then tried to play mulitplayer 50% of the time i'd get in, but then 50% of the time it would crash after 30 minutes of so.

Nothing I did solved the issue, & Bam !!just out of the blue about a week later the crash just stopped happening yet nothing had changed. Wish I could say I had help for 'ya but ...

Oh and FYI Steam was of no help either

Should totally sue Valve for hl2.exe has stopped working.


The only other option is to try Mac or Linux. I have had TF2 crash twice on me on Mac when playing multiplayer in a year and a half. It's probably crashed another 2-3 times while playing MvM since that came out. Whereas on Windows I've had it crash 5 times in a week…
 
Do you anti-analyzing set to super by any chance? HL2 hates SSAA, so if you did set to SSAA, then try putting it at MSAA. That's what fixed it for me. :)

I'e hanged my Anti-Analyzing from nothing to 2XMSAA there wasnt any other option for changing it, Didn't Work, Thanks anyways!
 
I had this problem for all of last week and the solution was just to do nothing honestly. I just kept try and try and reinstalling and eventually it worked. I found not moving the mouse while things are loading helps as well

Ok, I will try reinstalling it every so often and checking if it works, Hopefully it will be over in a week or so, Thanks!
