LGA 775 CPU Recommendations and GPU

Hello there Tech forums. I haven't used you much in my time here at edge-gamers but iv recently started to become very familiar with parts and computers in general. (What goes where, what is compatable with what and ect.)

My little brother plays a lot of League of Legends and a few other older games like CS:S and TF2. His PC isn't the best as it's running a Intel Celeron Processor E1400 (512K Cache, 2.00 GHz, 800 MHz FSB), a 6570 (Which isn't bad for what he is playing), and 4GB of ram but i'm thinking of upgrading him to a better kit. The ram can stay because he doesn't do much else then just play the few games. Maybe watch some netflix and skype with friends. Maybe an upgrade to 8GB if it's needed later on.

I was thinking of getting him an Intel Pentium E6700 (3.2Ghz Duo) or Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 (3.0GHz Duo) because they are under 100 dollars right now and seem pretty quick for the price. I don't see many options other than these two because the LGA 775 is outdated. I don't have the money to get him a whole new motherboard and cpu unless you guys can find some crazy deal that comes with a newer I3 or I5.

As for graphics i was thinking of upgrading him to either a 6670 or a 7750. Depends on how much i can get for them.

My budget right now is ~$150

You forgot about the Q8200. quadcore, 2.33ghz, runs for about 75$ on ebay atm. Altho a quick dualcore is better for gaming, you're right. Then you may want to think about this here.. Thats just what a quick search yielded. Make sure you pay via paypal. Gives you extra coverage, it's important. This cpu is still very potent for gaming, coupled with the right gfx card.Which brings me to...

Keep in mind i played BC2 on three monitors using a 5750 capping 22-24fps. And this little guy has more power. dirt cheap too at 70$.

For a big total of... 70+85=155$ shipping aside. which would probably be free to you if you're in the us. Well within your budget envelope mesays.

Hey Lava, if you're in the USA, I just found this post for a Core2Quad Q6600 (exact same cpu as I have in my current machine). $70 w/ free s&h. If I remember correctly, I paid more for mine (but its been so long that I cant remember anymore). One thing to keep in mind, just merely fyi, the best policy is to have 2x more memory than you have cores in your cpus. So if you want to get a min core2duo cpu, then his system will be fine since it already has 4gb of ram. However, quad core cpus run best on 8gb ram. My system current has 6gb of ram (I prev had 4gb & needed a small upgrade, so I got 2 more sticks for a safety net). However, since he doesnt run much then quad core cpu w/ 4gb of ram will be fine.

Ram is never enough, really. Altho past the 32gig mark you dont quite see a difference. And i'll reiterate that a quick dualcore will outdo a slower quadcore when it comes to gaming. Thats where ghz matter to supply the gpu, not a whole lot of apps period come with decent threading on more than a dual.

Exactly why I posted both a dual core & quad core cpu. I always want to help others by giving more than 1 option at any time. I never want to limit someone when it comes to upgrading their system (unless their upgrade leaves me very little choice in the first place). But ya, hes looking to give a minor update, so the differences in the cores wont really be noticed in the 1st place. I mean hes on a single core cpu, so anything more than single will def be a very noticeable improvement over what he has already.

I remember when I went from my old school core 2 duo to my current core 2 quad. I was extremely impressed, but now im ready to get more impressed whenever I upgrade now to the i5 (when I get my loan paid off).
