[Recovered journal from a deceased soldier, later identified as Stze Mikado]
January 18, 1942 Friday
Mein Fuhrer assigned the 1st Gebirgsj?ger division to attack and occupy the town of Harrington in Denmark. It took a while to get here from Germany, but we managed to arrive in the American occupied territory without any casualties. We set up camp near the outskirts of the town. The night before the attack, it was so quiet that I felt a little unsettled. I have a suspicion that the American soldiers are already aware of our arrival, and are awaiting our first move. Nevertheless, we, the 1st Gebirgsj?ger division, will drive them out! I just wish that I could close my eyes right now and wake up the next morning. I will keep the entry for the day short, as I do not want to get caught by one of our officer and be humiliated again for writing ?girly diaries.?
January 19, 1942 Saturday
It was time for the battle. At noon, we went over our strategies. Our Commander in Chief divided us into two groups. Our CinC along with a rocket trooper and a few men will attack the left flank, while our Generaloberst and Generalmajor, along with the rest of the troops will attack the right flank. That means, no one will go through the fountain in the middle. The plan was, the squads on the right side will quickly storm their area, and assist our squad by flanking the enemy on the left side from behind. I was assigned to our CinC?s squad. You know, I?m starting to think that attacking from the left side with a few men, is a very bad idea. Hopefully, the rest can help us as soon as possible. But what do I know right? I?m a just a soldier fighting for our fatherland. I trust our officers completely, and I believe they will lead us to victory. After the briefing, we made sure we were ready, our guns were loaded and our special soldiers received extra ammo. I have never been this nervous before.
A few minutes later, we were given the signal to attack. The town is small, so we took our time, carefully approaching from our side. We made sure to cover each other?s flank while advancing. There were grenades thrown at us, but fortunately, no one was hurt. Halfway through the town, we heard gunfire coming from the other side of the town. I really hoped they were okay, but the screams coming from our radio, were unnerving and not reassuring. I hoped those were the Americans, screaming in pain. Our squad had no choice, but to continue our course. As we slowly approach the river, I watched in horror as we got picked apart, one by one. I will never forget the sight of having a friend be torn in half from a direct rocket blast. It was then that I realized that there would be no help coming for us. Our CinC fell moments later. With no specific guidance around, I rushed to the enemies. It was a stupid mistake. While I managed to kill one, I got shot as well. I feigned death, hoping that the Americans would think I?m dead. I realized I was safe when I saw the Americans running away. I then heard from our radio that there will be a 2nd wave of reinforcements coming. I managed to drag myself to an abandoned house, and treated my wounds the best I could. Without proper treatment though, I may not make it out alive. We may have dealt considerable damages to the enemy, but we had lost a lot of men as well.
A few moments later, I heard the reinforcements arrived. I could hear their briefings on my radio. All three squads will attack from the right side. I don?t know exactly what they are planning this time. I?m guessing they are going to blitz through the right, and hopefully catch them by surprise? I thought we could catch them by surprise, but it just didn?t go well either. There were a lot of open areas in this town that were well-covered by the enemy riflemen. The same as the first battle, we were picked apart one by one from long ranges. I even heard someone get blasted by a grenade while receiving medical attention. Poor guy didn?t stand a chance. Then, everything became eerily quiet.
It?s been hours since that battle. I don?t hear any German voices around. I guess the Americans won again. I?m afraid of leaving my hiding spot, in fear of getting captured and tortured. I know those bastards. I heard stories from my squad mates about how savage those Americans are. I?d rather die than get toyed with by them. My wound still hurts a lot though. I think I got hit in an important vein. I?m really starting to feel sleepy. I cannot believe I still have the strength to write this. The sight of my own blood trailing on the floor scares the heck out of me; I really lost a lot blood. If I don?t find a medic soon, I may not be around much longer.
Letter from Unterfeldwebel prime ZERO to his beloved mother
Die 29te Januar 1942
Hallo, Mutter!
I am sorry I have been unable to write to you before this day but I have been so busy trying to stay alive in our previous battles.
We received some tips that the enemy was moving to capture Poland, so naturally my unit was dispatched to defend it against the allied schweine. My squad, led by the cunning and devious Generaloberst Annihilator with the help of Unterroffizier, recently promoted to Unterfeldwebel, Nuclear Cowboy (who I believe bribed the command staff to let him be second in command) were deployed into the mansion on our right flank. The mansion was a key location on the battlefield and if we would have lost it, the enemy would have captured Poland for sure!
Before the battle began our ReichMarshall wewo had given us his speech on how we were superior to any other Division in the Wermacht and how we were all true Germans fighting for the Reich. I wonder what is going through his mind, because most of us in this division are either from Bavaria or Austria. I am here only because the Nazi's occupied Austria and I was forcefully drafted into the military. But I have learnt to live with it by now. When the battle began I had a lot going on my mind so I was caught off guard by the enemy and they were able to injure me severely. But it didn't matter, for our new recruit, called smiths11, did his job well and was able to take many enemies with him before he was overwhelmed. And of course I must mention our fabled and greatly respected Stabsfeldwebel, Chuck Norris, whom also took many enemies down with his excellent rifling skills. I hear that across the battlefield, Smilodon took out the Allies best sniper and several others, while wewo joined in the fray personally, blowing up a couple Yanks with his Panzerschrect. We were able to drive the enemy off fairly easily because they clearly were lacking in morale.
The enemy wouldn't give up though. They made another push six hours later, after regrouping, and were close to defeating us with their flanking move, which failed in the end, for our spies had reported of the enemy movements in advance. Our brave and skilled Unterfeldwebel Skippy was ready to take up the challenge of stopping the enemy at our flank and he succeeded in catching the enemy in an ambush with his trusty MG-42. I killed four men that day and I was promoted to Unterfeldwebel. Morale is still high because our campaign has started only recently but if we don't capture a country soon, I fear we might have some deserters. I have already heard rumours that my squad mate kingswe might be on the verge of running off. Therefore I must keep my eye on him to see if he can be trusted. But otherwise my squad has a good understanding of each other and we have a team spirit like no other squad. I am confident in the fact that our squad will leave a mark in history.
Say hello to Vati and little Melanie for me!
