Not so much a sequel, but more of a successor to Gratuitous Space Battles (GSB) is the next game made by the same Indie Developer: Gratuitous Tank Battles.
If you are not familiar with GSB, let me explain it in brief: You are a Fleet Admiral. You design ships at the fighter, frigate and cruiser level. You customize everything. Their weapons, shields, engines, power generators, crew quarters and other tech add-ons. The selection list is wide and varied.
Then you deploy your fleet to fight an enemy fleet. You assign your ships general tactics and strategies. When all the planning is done, you click "fight" and watch the battle resolve. You have no control over the battle what so ever. If you win, you gain points (honor) to unlock more modules for even more ship customizations. If you lose, back to the drawing board. A very fun game with tons of replay ability, and it took up a lot of my gaming time last year for 2-3 solid months.
Now enter the next game in the series: Gratuitous Tank Battles (GTB). It's the same type of idea but with some changes. You are no longer in space. The game has been converted to a "Tower Defense" format. This made me hesitant to purchase it for a long time because that's a genre I never really got into, but I cannot stop playing this game.
The enemy has their assigned path. You must place your turrets and infantry at the right points and stop them from reaching the other side of the screen. Each enemy unit has a Victory Point value that the enemy team earns for each unit that makes it off the edge of the screen. The enemy is trying to reach so many victory points, while you are making sure it doesn't happen.
As expected, you have full customization over your turrets and infantry. From visual appearance to armaments, you choose everything.
But wait, there's more! Tired of being the defender? Go on the attack! Customize tanks, infantry and Mechs and see how many of your units can break through the enemy's tough defense.
This game features what the designers called "Adaptive AI," that is the AI can supposedly analyze the units you are deploying (on the attack or on the defense) and react accordingly in its own deployments. This makes for a truly unique experience. If you allow it, the AI can even deploy units that you have designed yourself, giving you a true taste of your own medicine.
Overall I have found this game to be fun. I've had a hard time putting it down. It's a great intro point to the tower defense genre and a fun take on it too. The customization options are numerous and again give the game lots of replay ability. In short, if you loved GSB you will love GTB. I didn't even get into the multi player, which is also very well executed.
If any other eGO members play this game, please let me know. At present no one on my friends list has it and I would love to play against a fellow clan member, as well as exchange design ideas and all that fun stuff. Let me know and we will make it happen!
tl;dr - GTB very fun, looking for other members that play.
