If you own a PS3 and enjoy RPGs in the vein of 16-bit and PS1 classics, you must own this game!
I'm almost 20 hours in at the moment, which translates roughly to 25-35% of the game I think, and already I'm pining for a sequel. The only way that's expected to happen though is if the international sales of the game (outside Japan) reach a certain level of success, and so now I'm posting about it to spread the word.
A tag-team effort between developer Level-5 (Dragon Quest, Dark Cloud, Professor Layton, etc) and anime powerhouse Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Castle in the Sky), there's plenty of star-power to go around. They've taken many gameplay aspects from the core of Japanese RPGs of yore (open and explorable world map, towns, air and sea travel, etc) and married them to more modern combat/party mechanics in the vein of Pokemon and the Tales series.
I could go on and on, but I'm not getting paid (to write this, anyways, although I am on the clock...). The core gameplay is everything that I've been missing from my RPGs since the PS1 days, the music is exquisite, the story and characters are beyond charming, the combat deep and engrossing, and the creature collection/training is extremely addicting.
I'll leave off with a link to a video review IGN did of the game, and while it does contain a couple spoilers, I don't view them as particularly detrimental.
Can't recommend this game enough to RPG lovers!
