Anyone among us have a Remington 700p 308.w?

I saw an ad recently for someone selling one in my area. Just wondering what peoples thoughts are.

I would mainly use it at the range, but would occasionally take it out for a hunt.

It comes with the Nighteater 6x24 scope as well. $1300 AUD for the lot.

Honestly that's more of a "Snipers" rifle as in military use. It could have a good use for target and precision shooting events but in my opinion it's too heavy to go hunting with if you're going to be luggin' it through the woods it's a bit too much. It's a good deal indeed as that's a pretty reliable gun. My decision would be to go with a smaller caliber for what your doing.

Edit: After a bit of googling if buying the gun brand new(1100-1800$) and the scope(150-250$). You won't be saving a lot but if its been taking care of properly that shouldn't be a issue.

As I said previously, I would mainly be using it at the range. Although I'm in the military, I am in no way a marksman. Shooting is a discipline I would just like to improve on in a recreational setting. And although the caliber may be higher than needed for hunting, I live in Australia where just about everything wants to kill you in the desert. The 308. is my guarantee my targets down.

Thanks for your input on the matter.

The 700 is one of the best bolt guns you can get. I'd personally prefer it in .300 Win Mag or .338 Lapua, but if that is a good price for one in your market, I'd still go for it.

I'd love one, but it's low on the priority list since there isn't anywhere close by I could really stretch it legs at, and it's no where near as practical as anything semi automatic.

I don't know if that scope is any good, but a good optic would be even more so important on a gun like this. Not saying you need to spend thousands on a Leupold, but find some reviews on the scope first. If it's not that good, see if the guy will come down on the price.

The Remington 700 is a great gun for the money. I've been looking at getting the 700 SPS Tactical in .308 myself. I'm not sure if it's a good deal because the gun market is a lot different in the US than Australia.

If you're mainly going to be taking it to the range the .308 is a solid choice. I'd say it's one of the most fun calibers to shoot but it isn't exactly cheap (around $0.50 USD per round, before the current ammo shortage). You might even consider downgrading to a .223 if you're only going to use it for target practice (still a fun caliber).

As far as going to higher calibers like the .300 Win Mag or .338 Lapua-- don't unless you can afford it. Win Mag is about $1.50 USD per round and .338 lapua is about $8.00 USD per round-- for the price you might as well buy a .50 caliber.

The .308 is a proven caliber and can take down most game you're likely to encounter short of a cape buffalo, elephant, or a body armor-wearing polar bear. It'll do great on the range and also for hunting.

TL; DR Good gun, great caliber, get the gun, get good at shooting at a distance, and have fun!

P.S. As for the scope, I can't say I've heard of it. You might want to do a fair bit of research into it as a long-range rifle normally needs a scope of the same price (just a rule of thumb). The scope could make or break the deal. You can always get your own scope but if you're buying used you can either get a great deal if a quality scope is included or get thrown for a loop.

I'm looking at .308 bolt actions myself, have mostly settled on the Ruger American in .308 but the 700 did come highly recommended by those I talked to. Something I've noticed about a lot of rifles like these out there is that they lack iron sights, which is a  thing for me. I enjoy both the redundancy in case of scope damage and the ability to quickly sight in on close targets.

I don't know anything about that scope, haven't heard of the brand before.

The scope is an Aussie brand, as I've just found out. The majority are fitted with illuminated reticles, and are primarily used by Kangaroo shooters at night.

A lot of reviews for the Nighteater are promising. I can always get another scope as well. Most likely I'll have one spare.
