re: Ogef Mikado

It has come to my attention that the young Ogef is keeping a diary. I am concerned that it may fall into enemy hands. I am even more concerned about his talk of deserters! Read his last two entries and then have his diary returned before he notices its absence. You must continue to monitor his entries and ensure that the diary does not leave our camp. In fact, give him a promotion, more of a reason to remain loyal. Also, get me the names of anyone speaking of desertion; they will be dealt with sharply!

Aura, France, Sunday, 8, February 1942

Today was a good day to be in France. When I woke up this morning, I was greeted by fine weather. You can feel the winter winds, but it?s not snowing. The sun is very bright, but it?s not hot. I can say that this is the perfect weather to write in my journal while enjoying a fresh cup of coffee! Surprisingly, because of our performances during yesterday?s skirmish, our officers told us they wouldn?t mind us having a day off, as long as we don?t cause any commotion. Any trouble and the deal is off. Showing the higher-ups why this division is the best among the rest of the army, can sometimes be rewarding. On my way back from getting coffee and something to eat from a nearby shop operated by a local family, I saw some of my squadmates playing football with the guys from the other squads. How they managed to get a ball and improvise a goal is beyond me. Them playing football doesn?t matter to me anyway. What really matters is how impressive our teamwork and efficiency were yesterday; we really drove back those Americans. I?m starting to trust these people more.
It all started yesterday morning, when a recon team alerted us of a huge enemy platoon quickly advancing on us. Recon assumed their numbers to be around 100 men. We were told by our superiors to expect an attack anytime soon, and sure enough it happened later in the day. I heard that a German airborne unit tried to help us and intercepted the platoon by using a hit and run tactic. They managed to split them up and thin the numbers of the incoming enemy platoon. That didn?t stop the Americans from attempting to go through with their original plan though. Fortunately, that attack also bought us some time to prepare, and quickly get into our defensive positions in the town of Aura. In order to further slowdown the invaders, we also decided to blow up the bridge in the middle of the town. Our platoon was divided into three. A squad and a machine gunner defends the left flank, while another squad guards the right flank. Our squad was assigned to hang back a bit, and act as the last line of defense.
A few moments later, the first wave arrived. I just kept quiet and stuck with the plan. I hid behind a sandbag near our camp, getting scolded for staying too far back. Everyone on the front line was falling, one by one, leaving my squad with a few survivors remaining from other squads. I managed to slay two, but we had to fall back again before things got even worse. I?m guessing our officers found us to be quite disorganized, and so decided to call for another quick briefing. The American invaders won that time, but they decided to fall back and regroup as well.
We had to get a new plan if we were going to defend Aura. Our squad leader grabbed a Panzerschreck and used it to defend our left flank. We also decided to use a hit and run tactic using grenades. As soon as the battle began, we armed our rifle grenades, then launched them across town. While it did delay the enemies, I?m not sure if the plan was a success. Regardless, we quickly went back to our original defensive positions. I have no idea what was going on after that. All I could hear was gunfire and explosions. As much as I want to peek around, our officers told us to stop moving and stand our ground. I confess that I was a bit surprised when I heard that we managed to stop them this time! The Americans were falling back!
In a blink of an eye, the flow of battle turned around. The invaders were the now the one standing their ground. I could see my fellow soldiers get a boost of morale. I realized that it was too early to celebrate; the battle was far from over. While we managed to push them back a few moments ago, they are still in control of parts of the town, and are now getting ready, waiting for us to come to them. We just need one more push to drive them out. So now, we are attacking. Time was running out, and we had to come up with a plan. Luckily for us, our leaders quickly came up with one. A squad will flank from the left side, while another squad will attack from the right. Our squad?s role is to support whichever squad needed help. They put up quite a resistance, but they were still no match for us! I even killed their machine gunner with a blindly fired rifle grenade. I can?t help but laugh every time I see the Americans run for their life! They?re frantically running around like chickens with their its head cut off!

And that?s where it ended yesterday. Because of this event, Mein Fuhrer managed to further strengthen the alliance between Germany and France. With an increasing military power, the Axis powers will surely become unstoppable!

Frostvale, Finland, Sunday 15, February 1942:

It?s been days since we?ve been assigned to Frostvale, Finland and await for further orders. Our food and supplies are running low and, because of the heavy snowfall, we do not expect some to arrive any time soon. We haven?t even received our winter gear yet. We?re still using our standard uniforms, which are really not designed for extreme weather like this. Some of us are getting sick, some are starting to get irritated and angry, and some are even planning to ditch us. Fortunately, there are officers sane enough to keep things under control. I wouldn?t run if I were them. We all know what happens to traitors. Despite all these problems, most still have high morale and are really eager. I really don?t know if these men are really loyal to Mein Fuhrer and to our motherland, or if they are just plain insane. I mean, I don?t know how the heck they still manage to smile and be eager despite our current conditions. I?m guessing they?re like that because people say that, if we manage to win the war, we will be bathed in fame and glory, while our names will be written down in the book of history. I don?t care about that though. I just want to get this over with, go home and continue my studies at University. I?m really starting to think that I?m the only one that?s completely normal and sane here.
And so it begins. Just as the snowfall stopped, we have received the order to finally attack and take over Frostvale. I see that the Americans are anticipating our attack, and are running around town setting up defenses. After eating our meals and preparing our gear, we gathered up inside what was once a bar. As much as I?d love to grab a fine wine from the basement, we don?t have time for that. We quickly go over our strategies. One squad goes left, another goes right, and we are going middle. I managed to get a peek inside the town through one of the windows. Speaking of windows, this town has a lot of them. It?s like, every corner you look at, there?s at least one window there. This going to be difficult to approach. Our two exits at the sides are very open to sniper fire. The Americans can even launch their rifle grenades right in front of our base. I?m expecting that before we even get out of this place, there will be casualties. This is going to be a sniping heaven for the enemy sniper. You know my expectations from a while ago? I am so wrong. We have our own sniper as well, I think his name is Lungbuster. I really don?t know, because I rarely talk to him. He?s quiet and is a mysterious person. You can say that he?s a lone wolf and prefers to be alone at times. Anyway, this guy, as soon as the signal to begin was given, he aimed his rifle towards a window, and popped the enemy sniper within seconds! I have no idea how he even managed to spot that enemy sniper. As soon as that happened, we took advantage of the situation, and quickly ran to cover inside the houses in the middle of town. We use smoke to cover us while cross the wide open street to the right side, to attack from there. Everything was going according to plan, at least until we kind of screwed up, lost some men, then decided to retreat back to where we started. We had to retreat. We were getting overwhelmed, because we are not familiar with the area, and we have no idea where the enemy is firing from. We managed to get reinforcements, but so did the Americans.
Our attacking plan remains the same. Rush the mid, stay off the streets, attack from the middle then go around to the side. Remember the Lungbuster I talked about? What he did a while ago, he did it again. He made another perfect shot against the enemy sniper. Once again, I was just in awe. After that, we did almost everything we did last time, but this time it?s done in a more efficient and organized fashion. I?m not sure what was going on, as I was lagging behind a bit. What I do know is we finally won this time! We managed to occupy half the town. Our officers get to decide whether we would continue pushing, or we would be standing our ground and let them come to us. By majority, they have decided to attack and completely push the Americans out. Normally, I would ask our officers if they?re insane, because we all saw how hard it was to win the last battle. But, because I saw how my own squadmates handle their weapons, all of my doubts disappeared. I even heard from another squad, that our own sniper managed to kill at least seven or eight without any second thoughts and remorse. That guy might be a living god of war or something. I didn?t get to participate much in the last battle, as I was shot while I was peeking through a window. It hurt so bad that I felt like I was going to die. Lucky for me, it wasn?t fatal. There?s no doubt about the outcome of the battle. With our superior troops and mentality, we managed to completely drive away the enemies and take this territory as our own!
The following day, I was finally granted an honorable discharge. I guess getting shot wasn?t so bad after all. The medical officers deemed that I am incapable of fighting any further and recommended that I back out from the war. I could finally go home, and I might even be able to use my military resources for my studies.
