High ping in games.

For a while now I've had higher ping then usual in games like TF2,CSS and WoW. In CSS/TF2 my ping would usually hover 50-60, occasionaly a spike here and there but would always go back to normal. Now whenever I join a game my ping is always 115-130ish and never goes lower and like 250-300 in WoW. I have no programs running in the background and nothing has really changed with the router or internet except speed changing from 2mb to 20m download and 1mb upload.

I've ran maleware scans and virus scans and nothing has came up.
 
1st off I assume you have rebooted off both your modem & router (and double check that no setting have change on your router)
Have you run any speed test or trace router to check you speed & hops.
Also I would strongly suggest calling your ISP & asking them to run a check on you modem, router & line (they can do that while your on the phone with them, heck mine I don't even need to call. I can contact them via forums or an app)
 
I've rebooted my router and everything, it still occurs. When I do speedtest the speed varies...one min it'll be 2mb, 10mins later .45mb or 17mb, it's odd. I haven't done any trace route stuff, idk how to do that. Our ISP says everything is fine, but they always say that.

All I know about the router is its some netgear dual band router?
 
thrall, are you using your wireless side of the router? And if not you should go in and disable the wifi just to be sure no one has been using it around you.
Also if you are using the wifi go in and make a crazy password with letters, numbers, symbols and even use a CAP letter here and there, if you have done that go into the wifi settings and only let the computers you know that are just your mac ID to connect to it.
 
I'm using wireless, had this adapter for about 4 years. I'll check with my dad on the new passsword. It is password protected although a crappy one since he has a bad memory. As far as I know/aware of, only mine,my moms and dads comp connect to the router. All wireless. I have thought of buying a network card and going wired. I'll check into other things.
 
Wireless is the cause of your speed drops. WiFi is never trustworthy for high bandwidth travels of internet. Go wired, you wont see anymore issues.

That's a rather generalized statement. If you are using a "properly set up" wireless network you should seldom ever experience any drops.Unfortunately most are set-up properly so with that said, I always suggest going wired unless the run is just impossible to make.

Question for thrall is: Are you using any wireless extenders (booster) on this network or is everything getting it's signal from you wireless router?
 
It could be something to do with lines with their servers running to yours. A 'tracert' command in a command window would allow us to see if that is true or not. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if they're doing work on the lines as well.

If you want to try the tracert command, you can look at how that's possible here. You will, however, need the IP's that you're trying to connect to in order to do the trace.

Start> type in cmd, right click and run as administrator (just in case).

Puke- My adapter thing I'm using has the words speed booster on it. I dont know if that answers your question or not, as i am totally clueless on network stuff. I do have a cable made, roughly 20-25ft, I just need a ethernet card. I'll do the tracert later and see.

I did the tracert thing, idk if I was sopose to use my ip address or a serves for example. But I did mine, came up with like 483ms, 128ms etc etc

A server, so let say eGO 2fort -69.64.95.111:27015

Once you run the Command Prompt (CDM) as admin
you should see
C:\Windows\system32> (or maybe just C:\Windows>), after the > type in tracert & the server IP 69.64.95.111

so you have this C:\Windows\system32>tracert 69.64.95.111 (or C:\Windows>tracert 69.64.95.111) then press enter.

Take a screen shot when it's complete

you could also do C:\Windows\system32>tracert google.com, but prefer you use a server IP you know & play on.

As far as set-up of say a range extender or better for your situation it sounds to me since distance/range doesn't seem to be the issue" would be a true repeater". If you stay wireless that is.

It could be a variety of problems. I had an issue with my router's speeds and found it was lagging back because it was congested with dust. Clean it out with a little compressed air, it may help out

You got some ugly numbers in there.
Hops 6, 7, 10, 11,12.
What is a good ping for you on this server usually? Below 75, 100, 125?

Also can you run a trace router for us to the ips listed in hops 6, 7, 10, 11,12.

And if you be kind enough also try another eGo server you play on

The first image is tracing to the ip of hop 12. The 2nd image is tracing to the Ego Highschool server in CSS which i've played on forever lol. It's been well over a year or 2 since ive been TF2 but i remember the ping was roughly 50-65 and that was on the old router and 1mb connection. In CSS it was always 60-65ish sometimes lower. It wasnt till a few months ago that it just spiked and stayed that way.
 
Call your ISP and ask to talk to an engineer. Have then run an attenuation test. Anything above 50 is no good. If possible, ask them to put you on another switch.
 
Remember, hes doing the traces through WiFi, if he did it through an ethernet cable, itd probably be different numbers.......

I guess the 1 bit of good news is I don't think your wireless is the fault, would still prefer you to be wired but I don't think will change things too much.
Not sure if something got screwed up on your ISP's end when your up/downs speed changed, if the moved you switch wise or what. But those numbers sure lead one to believe this is a ISP issue.May be the way they are routing you, I just can't say.

But it's time to get someone from you ISP to seriously look @ your system & traffic.
Keep that trace route info hand & press them with it, sorry but best of luck.
