G'day, The purpose of this thread is just my curiosity. I'd like to know your very FIRST experience with TF2. (Gamemode/Class/Score)

I played TF2 back in September and start with Soldier. The idea of shooting rockets at people simply appealed to me. I played on ctf_2fort for at least an hour straight before noticing how bad I was at it. I could be wrong, but I'm sure I dropped 75:48ish. I tried my hardest to get to the intelligence to win the game simply because I like to win, however, I didn't realize people only play 2fort for deathmatch. So, after this hour of TF2 I established 3 things.

  1. I liked this game
  2. It has a high skill curve
  3. It has a long lasting value

I was able to deduce these things because I have played prior competitive FPS. I honestly believe TF2 competitive does not get the recognition it deserves. Each class is unique and has high skill cap you'd have to play for months just to get a basic understanding of the mechanics.

So, I'd like to hear your first impressions and experience involving the Hat Fortress game.

Two years ago, I had a friend that had the orange box for xbox. he showed me half life 2 and I thought it was really cool, so I bought it for myself. After playing hl2 and portal alot, I tried out tf2. I started with the sniper because I was a pretty good quickscoper in cod, only to realize this game was nothing like cod. keep in mind this is on the PS3. After realizing I suck at sniper, I tried out solly and pyro, who are now my two favorite classes. I then found a dustbowl server I really likes, and I played on it about five hours a day, dustbowl only. After a while, I did some research on the game and found alot of tf2 channels, which led to gaming channels, which led to me being on the internet alot. I also found out the PC version of tf2, which was worlds better than the ps3 version I was playing. So i installed tf2 and steam on my four RAM computer. Despite lagging every ten seconds (ME-ME-ME-ME-ME-MEDIC! still rings in my head) i loved the game to death, finding other classes I really enjoy, like demo. I also got back my love for the sniper, even though I am still bad at it.

After a little bit, I found the eGO dbowl server and became a regular there, earning myself some reputation. I found that all the guys with =(e)= tags and =(eG)= tags were more popular and liked by the server, so I asked them what do to get them. No ine recruited me, only pointed me in the right direction. I registered, only to be told I need a maul profile, then later they realized i never submitted an app. I thought all this work to join their little clan was stupid and a waste of time, but after reading some stuff and looking at the forums, I decided to get into it. I then got my new, 8 RAM comp, and now here I am.

Also, good post Nico :P

I played TF2 for the first time a few days after it went F2P. I stuck to the training mission on Dustbowl for awhile before I dared venture into the mutiplayer environment as it was my first FPS game.

I finally plucked up the courage to get online with it and joined the eGO 2Fort server and picked Soldier as my class, as that's the one I had felt most comfortable with in the training missions. I immediately discovered that people are WAY better at this game than bots (at least on the normal setting). I became very lost on the map so I ended up sticking to what I now know to be tha battlements and spammed rockets everywhere. Needless to say I did not do well. Due to my inexperience with shooters and the map, I usually died between 10 and 15 times before I got a kill.

I'm not sure why, but I stuck it out and eventually got to be a decent TF2 player, though I am by no means that good even now, but I still thoroughly enjoy the game.

I played TFC professionally back in the day, so the first thing I noticed was OMG! Where are my precious grenades? How can I conc-jump? How can I MIRV the spawn? The pyro's rocket launcher is missing? How am I supposed to grief the snipers? What do you mean my pipe bombs don't explode when I die? Where is the DetPack? What do you mean medics can no longer infect enemies? No napalm grenades - is there NO spam left in the world?

As for what class I first choose, that's obvious. Pyro, of course. I've played pyro since the QTF days. Actually, I was playing pyro before that, just not in video games. It's a little known fact but Robin Walker came up with the pyro class after watching me do yardwork.

I got The Orange Box back in September of 2007, when it first came out and the first game I started downloading was TF2 because its graphics and art style really appealed to me. The first server I joined was running 2Fort, and naturally this was my first pick in the server browser because it was the only game mode I could recognize from other games (Capture The Flag).

For the first 15 minutes I was just running around as a Pyro, just admiring the the design of the map and TF2's cartoonish look. At that time, clicking the right mouse button while wielding the flamethrower did nothing (shocking)! The idea of people burning and destroying buildings with fire was so amusing that I kept playing Pyro exclusively for a couple of days. My K/D ratio was beyond awful, I'm almost certain it wasn't above 0.4. Things weren't improving when I found out that you can taunt by pressing G.

Back in the day, there weren't any hats that could get me to continue playing the game. It was TF2's unique gameplay elements and personality of each class that got me playing it endlessly. That feeling you get after figuring out something so useful, yet so obvious (holy crap, I can actually disable Engineer's buildings with this thing-a-ma-jig).

I have yet to learn how to play this game. ;_;

I'm ashamed to admit this, but here we go.

TF2 was actually my first venture out into the online gaming world. I knew about it from some friends on another corner of the internet. Of course, being the knowledge-hungry person that I am, I completely read ALL of the options and tweaked them during the training. After going through training multiple times, I decided to finally go online. I immediately went to the first mode I recognized: CTF. 2fort. This developed into a passion for that map to the point I would go nowhere else.

When a person thinks of FPS's, the first thing that comes to mind that resembles a 'class' is, of course, the sniper. So there I was, being one of the scrub snipers on 2fort that I pwn today. After a while I found my first weapon (A vita-saw) and then a second weapon (Bushwacka) and so on. Wondering what these were, I found out their uses and equipped them. Not much later I looked up the TF2 wiki and read every scrap of material on it, and thus I learned how to play TF2.

Apparently I was matched into eGO's 2fort server early on, because somehow I already had 2k kills and 6k deaths in Gameme before I ever joined eGO. That's why I still don't have an even K/D ratio today. Also, somehow I managed to get within the top 5 people with Machina kills before I became an =(e)= (512 kills). I'm still within #30, despite never using that weapon again.

I actually found out about TF2 in an unusual way.
I used to host mods for MW2 and a downloaded a Team Fortress 2 mod, because one of my friends from CoD invited me to his TF2 group. Then, a while later, I downloaded a Steam Crack (50+ steam games) and got into TF2 after realizing it was included in the download. I played it on a while on Surf maps, which I found real fun to play sniper on.
Then, I got rid of the Crack when TF2 went free and started playing. A while later, I stumbled on the eGO 24/7 Mesa server, and seeing as I was in eGO CoD division before but left, I joined again. That's pretty much it

I started online gaming with Quake Live. Then one of me friends said I should play this Fortress Forever game, and I pretty much spent the next week playing it. I went a little into comp for both Quake Live and ff, but never was reaaly good at either game. Fortress Forever still outranks TF2 in my eyes, but it died a few weeks after TF2 was released. I pretty much stopped gaming at this point and focused on school.

Fastfoward ~3 years, I download TF2 because I was bored one night. I started playing soldier because that's what I played in ff. It turns out none of the skills transfer and could barely walk in TF2. I got frustrated and just hit the random button and got scout. I really enjoyed scout and found this eGO foundry server that I played on pretty regularly.

Another 6 months later, I join up to eGO and start becoming good at this game.

I started at the midnight release, and went 50:0 as soldier which is currently my most kills as soldier still that night.

a friend told me that tf2 was a great game and is now free. i already had steam so i thought cool and downloaded it. turns out he was right. my first game was on the eGO 2fort server (i was already in eGO) and i failed miserably. i kept playing and eventually became competent at the game like i am today

Years ago, a friend let me use his Steam account to play TF2. I ended up playing that game a ton out of a desire to get better at it.

Of course he stopped letting me use it after awhile because I was on it all the time.

And then of course years later I got the Orange Box as a Christmas gift and was back on TF2 full time. I played a lot of Payload and a ton of Spy. (still do) He appeals to me the most as a class because the whole idea of a one-touch kill is extremely attractive to me. I kept playing him and went so far as to do very extensive research on him in order to get better at him and put it into practice. I eventually created my own unique style of playing Spy and got onto somewhat of a competitive level with him.

One of the first servers I went on was the eGO Payload server that we had about 2 yrs ago that was never really full. GamingRobot32 was trying to fill it and asked me to join eGO so I agreed for the heck of it.

haha, so many of the same thoughts ran through my head. Except I never played anything competitively. I had the orange box not too long after it came out, but my college laptop then couldn't even handle TF2. I'd only played Portal and half life for a long time. One of my roommates started playing TF2 and I had liked TFC a lot, so I had always wanted to try to play TF2. When I finally got in, it was right around when new items started coming into the game. (But seriously, no grenades? NO pyro rocket launcher? NO INFECTION MEDIC?!?!) That was heartbreaking to play.

I started out as engi, because I was always that type of person (and also afraid of actual action). But I actually ended up playing spy the most. Now, after several long breaks from the game, I suck at spy - and out of bitterness main pyro. I played on 2fort, because 2fort. I barely go near that map now, but man I would never have dreamed of leaving it before. I don't remember if I was any good in the beginning, but I certainly wasn't great.

Did this answer your question? Nope. I'm posting it anyway.

I bought Portal back in 2008 and loved it so much that I went and bought The Orange Box the next day. After I finished all the Half-Life games; I fired up TF2 for the first time and instantly fell in love with it.

Hats <3

I picked up TF2 back in 2007 Orange Box, was looking for something I could just join & play casually (as the time I was still heavily playing competitive Quake, UT & HL). I like the class system since I was also playing another class system game called Gore. I didn't get to play TF2 much at that time 'cuz my league sucked me back in. (can't recall my 1st game in TF2 from back then).

So didn't pick up TF2 again till nov '12. came in as a medic just to get the lay of the land & proceeded to get back stabbed my 1st 3 spawns.

While it's an entertaining game I always wonder how much better it would playing competitive with a "real" teamwork.

"Real?" Competitive TF2 is all about teamwork. It's quite exciting and I love a good scrim.

Started back in 2009, First class was spy [Reason I bought the game ;D] First map? Sawmill :I My score was something like 0 and 345435. I had a terribad computer with a terribad internet connection so one step and I froze end ended up in a saw or dead. I gave up on the game but I knew I loved it. I found the 3 stack of hats and traded it off for a deadringer. Worst thing I've ever done. :c
