My sister has a 2012 Toyota Rav4. She gets free oil changes for 2 years if she uses reg conventional oil. However, my dad decided to pay $80+ for a synthetic oil change (im wondering if its a mix of the synthetic oil price & labor for that much). Anyways, I did some research last night & found out that the latest synthetic oil technology isnt nearly as bad on newer model vehicles as it is with older model vehicles (that is, with little to no problems of course).

Is this true? Can someone who is certified back up this info or defunct it?

I'm not ASE certified, but I'm shade tree certified,I've been working on my own vehicles for 20 years :P I wouldn't run synthetic oil in anything personally. My mother used synthetic in her Neon & changed it every 3,000 miles. After about 20,000 miles all the seals & gaskets started leaking, I made her switch over to regular motor oil & it stopped leaking. That's about my only experience with synthetic oil though.

Ya I think what im gonna do is have my sister tell the future mechanic at the Toyota dealership to switch her back to reg oil, this way it wont be an issue. I did hear about that issue from some stuff that I read tho.

I've never used synthetic oil personally. I think my mom had it once in her 2011 Chevy Traverse, but only for one oil change. It just had some stuff mixed in to clear things up. Stick to good old 5W-30 now!
