Do you fly for SkyWest? I am on a lot of 200/700/900s flying from Omaha to Medford, OR and back twice a month - both Delta and US/United.

When I was in the AF, the joke was that ANYONE can land a plane, as long as walking away was not a requirement.

Well, that's only partly true. They will not start, taxi, takeoff and land themselves. Climbing, cruising, descending, are modes that need pilot input. About the only thing the autopilot can do by itself is fly level and follow a course (turns) programmed by the pilot into the autopilot.

It will not speed up or slow down by the autopilot. It cannot deal with emergencies (engine fire/failure, depressurization, landing gear failures, flap failures, etc.) The autopilot cannot handle the radio. It does not understand ATC changes to the planned route without pilot input. And most importantly, a lot of it is run by computers. We all understand how computers can make mistakes and really screw up your day. Would you want a pilotless airplane flying you?

Takeoff is the most dangerous part. You are low and slow, trying to get into the air.

Landing is certainly the tricky bit. I've been flying for 26 years, and I still have less than perfect/smooth landings. So many variable change with each landing.

And I fly the CRJ-700 or the CRJ-900 (70 and 90 seat Canadair Regional Jets).
