I have a problem. I want to and try to fill up the servers, especially Foundry, but I almost always end up doing the exact opposite and find myself alone in a server with bullet riddles corpses stacked to the sky.

So I ask you members of the TF2 division how do I solve this problem and get these servers (Foundry) filled? Cause more gun is just not cutting it.

The exact opposite of more gun.

What I do to fill up servers:
-Never try. THIS IS A NO-NO
-Compliments don't hurt. (This is a bit over the top and unnecessary)
-Invite people who are in FFTF. (Usually a couple on at every hour)
-Perfect time to practice classes you are awful at. Unless you are Wilson and destroy while being afk.

Also, for extra lulz to make people think you are bad, and stay, use the sticky jumper and rocket jumper to try and hurt people :P

Also: Never forget to encourage pubs to invite their friends. After all, the pubs are the pulse of our servers ^^

In addition to what Kiririn said, here are some more helpful tips:

  • Never idle on the server, ever! You think you might be helping with "server rankings", but Valve will hate you for it. It's no different than having bots on the server faking the player count. When pubs join the server, they want to jump right into action with people who are actively playing.
  • If you are filling a server and you have to leave, don't go into spectator, quit the game instead. This is no better than my first point in this post.
  • QuickPlay has a complex matchmaking formula that is extremely complex and you will never figure it out. There is no set number of players that have to be on the server before it "kicks in". Just remember that the matchmaking system likes active servers with people who stick around in them playing.
  • Try to get as many players in the server as possible. QuickPlay will detect a high influx of players and start sending traffic our way sooner.
  • Ask a member of Leadership to make announcements on the actual Steam groups (TF2, FFTF) about the server that needs to get filled.

Recruit plenty of people and get them to follow you on each fill.

What I usually do when there's only so many people on the server is just mess around or go on a melee spree or something. Then when you get over 10 people on the server, or around there, then I usually start playing a bit more seriously. Not always though.

Sometimes the servers just don't fill up. Don't take it personally or try to find fault in something or someone. Sometimes people just don't want to play on a certain server or at all. It happens.

Use globalchat. Other admins are your friend!

Don't go battle engie right off the bat. No one likes a good battle engie 1v1.

Just mess around and try to keep people involved with the server, you don't have to kill them. Also try to talk to them, make them feel welcomed onto our server like they can stay.
