So I decided to main spy, the only problem is that I'm used to C&D only with Saharan, always near the enemy base taking out single targets, or taking out the tele when the coast is clear. Want to try something else but it's constant gibbing or something similar. Example, I am really good with the C&D but horrible with the other watches. How do I use them? What knives are good for certain situations if I decide to do something that isn't stock knife. Revolver? which sapper for which situation. S. Set for a certain watch for a certain situation? How to deal with scouts and pyros? Just want to get a good mindset and foothold on the subject before I delve into it.

Well, my method of spy is normally the same as yours, Cloak and Dagger with the Saharan Spy set. Works beautifully on defense on payload or sometimes CP maps. Other times, I switch it up, using enforcer and either stock or spycicle (depending on amount of pyros/availability of health packs), and I'm trying to get better with ambassador.

How to use different watches is another thing.

The stock watch (or any reskin of your choice) is great for a front lines spy. Use it to get behind enemy lines or to make a stealthy retreat. You should always watch for dropped ammo when stealthed, as it can last quite a while, but if you want to sit around, that's good for Cloak and Dagger.

The Cloak and Dagger is pretty neat. A fast recharge and being able to stay cloaked indefinitely means you can camp, retreat a bit and stay in the shadows, and come out when the time seems right. Stab a few dudes and shoot some more, then go back to a hiding spot.

The Dead Ringer is a challenge to pull off correctly, as everyone expects a DR spy, and has learned how to deal with them. The trick with this is to take a hit or two, and act like you're retreating. The Dead Ringer really is great for spies that can act well. Like the stock watch, you can pick up ammo to make your cloak last longer, and the first few seconds of cloak reduce incoming damage by a lot.

On to knives. Generally, the stock knife is a good solid knife with no downsides, and no gimmicks. This is your go-to knife for all-purpose use. The next option would be a Spycicle. Not the best option, but if you're in a situation where you can sit and wait for a knife, or shoot your way out, go ahead and take this pyro-protection. Another good option is the Kunai. This little bugger is great for making a stab, and tanking some damage while you shoot out, then you can cloak away with your watch of choice to stab again. Of course, there's a problem if you can't get behind someone, as you only have 60 life to start.

Guns are so underrated by most new spies, just chose one you like, but generally le'flappydoodle (too lazy to attempt spelling) and the Diamondback are avoided. Ambassador is deadly in the right hands, the enforcer is deadly in even more hands, and the stock revolver is great if you need to do 120 damage faster than the enforcer's two shots.

Spy is about espionage as well. Point out low health team members, find out what loadouts are going down, like kritz or uber on the medic, and possibly what dangerous fellows are in what positions. Sapping is another thing you can do, and it's best to do it with your team to provide some extra firepower to make sure the stuff goes down nice and tidy.

Acting is all about making people you're doing something, but you're not. Like run to a health pack while cloaking, and when fully cloaked, go the opposite (or some other clear and unpredictable direction) way in order to buy some time and throw off spycheckers. Feigning with the deadringer needs to be believable, so take a hit or two if you can afford it, and make it look like you're actually dead instead of taking fall damage and cloaking just to be invisible.

For sappers, really it's a matter of prefrence, and possibly how much teamwork you have. If you have a pesky engie nest and you can't get the engie down yourself, bring out the red tape to stall the engie, and possibly have your team shoot down the sentry/nest while it's busy un-building itself. If you can get the engie down or far enough from the sentry, the stock sapper is good, and a few shots from your revolver will speed up the process.

And for scouts, generally it's good to avoid them, as they're nasty, but easily taken down by your other team mates. Remember, this is TEAM fortress 2, be a team player, point out the scout to your team, and they'll be sure to take it down at some point. Since scouts can do a lot of damage close range, you're pretty dead if they get good meatshots on you. And dealing with pyros is a matter of mind games. Know where health packs are if you see a pyro, and be prepared to go for one. Try to cloak and get around him, or have a team mate take him out. If you can, and he's at the back of the pack, take the pyro out before killing other enemies.

And lastly, know how to play against spy. Be in the mind of your enemy, think as they would think. If you were them, what would you do?

There's probably things I forgot, and things I'm somewhat wrong about. This is all just from my experience, but also, if you're maining spy, don't insist on being spy if there are 5 spies on your team. Switch off, especially if you're on top of the scoreboard. Sometimes it seems the lower-scoreboard people copy the top few guys, so spy will be open in a bit if you choose something else. Lastly, have fun, make your own ideas based on experience and playstyle, because not everything I said here will be true for everybody's way of playing spy, and have fun again.

Said i was going to main spy, not it being the only class I ever play XD

Said i was going to main spy, not it being the only class I ever play XD

ofc, but some people are silly and refuse to switch off, providing only "I main ___" as a reason not to switch off, so I plug that in any class discussion, as a reminder that I'm silently judging them from across the internet if they don't switch :P

Well, I main pyro, so the best advice I can give you on how to deal with them is USE YOUR FREAKIN' GUN! Yes, that's it really. Just keep your distance really for pyros and you should be fine. Otherwise, if you see them distracted and not paying attention to you, it wouldn't hurt going for a backstab.

Using your gun is a second priority if you're being chased by someone that knows your a spy. It's possible to kill chasing enemies with a knife, but that requires prediction and skill, like strafing (only moving left and right) to knife. It also needs to be less obvious. Like, you use a gun and moving backwards, leading to the stairs, you switch to your knife by the time you jump over they enemy, you stab their back and it's done.

You should check out stabby's videos or OMFGNinja's for more helpful tips, really. They were enough to get me a 10-point spawn camping kill streak, lol.

Edit--

I forgot this one. You can only uncloack with a dead ringer when in a loud and distracting situation for the enemy team, such as they heavy's minigun spinning and soldiers shooting rockets.

My guide n Spy isn't about getting alot of backstabs but about surviving and harassing the enemy team. (I play alot of spy so this from experience) Note: I'm mad explaining so don't expect much :P

The first I tell you is that your loudout is key to your game. Their isn't a specific loudout thats godlike anymore *cough* eforcicle*cough* but here are some tips you need to know.

The DR (Dead Ringer): Lets you be a more aggressive spy, your jpbs will holding this watch is to make your death believable. When your facing a pyro let the pyro burn your for a second then pull out your DR because if you have it before, then you just wasted it. The DR works well with any knife especially the ER, Kunia, and the BE.
When you have this watch out DO NOT de-cloak immediately, look around before decloaking because there may always be some there.

Harassing the enemy team: The first thing you want to do (depending on the match) is to get those teles, The stock sapper is best for this, sap the tele and start shooting it to bring it down faster.

Fooling the Enenemy team: Your disguise is key, do not disgusie a soilder and heavy in my opiion due to them being really slow and when you disuise here the key thing you must do. Use the "B" button. This button is key as to your disguise, as it changies you to the last class you disguise as and it let you change your weapon load out.
eg. If you disguise as soilder, you automaticaly have out your Rocket launcher. The thing you must do is change your weapon tot he sapper the press the "B" button. Doing this will make it look like the soilder will have out his shotgun. This helps in fooling the enemy team to believe that your one of them.

tl:dr: Be wary of your disguise, always look behind you, change your disguise regular and key classes to backstab. 1. Pyro's, Heavy, Snipers, Medics, and everything else.

If you don't want to read any of this watcht hese videos, my recommendation is Stabby and OMFGNinja, but these videos are my own right here:

Or unless you use the Saharan set. I don't because I hate the YER.

Really the only thing you can do is equip a good high-reward (Rewarding if used correctly) set and just practice, practice, practice. I use the DR most of the time, but if the enemy team is smart and has few pyros, I use stock.

For knives I use the Black Rose. No exceptions.

For sappers, stock is best. Seriously, if you're up against an engie nest, it's really way better to go demo/heavy with an uber medic than it is to use the RTR to make it easier for them.

I'd use the stock mostly, and I would definitely use the ap-sap for the rest of my tf2 career, if only I had it, lol.
For the knife, I'd go with the spycicle because it's a very good weapon for in case a pyro attacks, also for silent kills.
The kunai is also useful, but requires more skill. Same goes for YER and Wanga Prick, which should mostly be applied with C&D.

As for guns, the stock weapon should be the most trustful.
The Ambassador if you aim really well. Same with The enforcer, but I'm uncertain about that weapon since I've used it for a good while.
I heard L'Etranger is also good, but I haven't used it yet.

I didn't take the time to read other peoples posts because 'Merica. I DID read Honorbounds actually...I agree with most of what he said. I wouldn't jump into stock if you're used to CnD. IT will feel odd. DR has about the same drain time so you'll know how much time you have. The best knife is stock. It has now downsides or upsides. It won't melt from pyros, it lets you disguise and you have all of your health. BEst sapper is sapper. It gets the job done. Scouts, let them back pedal into your knife ;D They do it pretty efficiently. Pyros! They are actually pretty tunnel visioned, if one sees you and attacks you they will follow you into a sentry nest. USe that to your advantage, lead them to the team or into a corner stab. [If nothing else shoot them in the legs.]

TL;DR 'Merica

Wow Clone, I wish I could play against that terrible of a team.....

learn how to act, learn how to predict opponents' motions, don't make eye contact, don't run directly at someone's back (so obvious), learn how to stab n' sap, it's generally better to get 1 stab and survive than to maybe get that 2nd stab and then die, don't spend too much time practicing trick stabs (especially jump stabs). You can get many more stabs if you are sneaky than if you are good at jump/trick stabs, although they are really fun.

basically what strabes said, but this video covers a lot of it:

Not in the mood for a long post soooooo:

The balisong's usually the way to go. It's good in any situation.

Amby if you can aim, choice of revolver if you can't.
