In the recent Steampipe update there was an overhaul in how skins in TF2 were stored. They also introduced a new file to TF2 modders, called the vpk. Using a vpk to store your skin's data makes TF2's start time much faster. This tutorial will show you how to convert your game skins into vpk files. It's incredibly simple.

First of all, gather all the skins you want to convert in one place outside of the game files, like so:

IMPORTANT: You MUST go into each skin you download and isolate just the "materials", "models", "particles", "sound" folders, or what have you, like so:

After you have done this, make your way to Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/Team Fortress 2/bin:

Inside this folder, you will find an application called "vpk"

Now, go back and open your archive of skins in another window and minimize it. Drag every folder onto "vpk", and a vpk version of that folder will appear in the original location!

After you have done this, go ahead and move all those vpk files into Program Files/Steam/steamapps/common/Team Fortress 2/tf/custom:

And you're done!

They have a section just like this, even the same length, on the Steampipe FAQ.

VP can't read. It's proven.
