Hey guys, I recently have got a laptop from a friend of mine and I had a few questions, here is a screenshot Ive taken of the destkop, and I was wondering how can I get rid of the white boxes around the icon's text? (and how fix some of the icons, some just look like crap, my the max registry cleaner one) and I was wondering how can I get 1280x1024 with it? the only screen resolutions I have are 800x600 and 1042x768 (is there a way that I can like "trick" it into getting 1280x1024? )

Aint the best laptop out there, but she runs garry's mod/DoD and peggle deluxe

Right click on the Desktop, goto 'Arrange Icons By' > Uncheck 'Lock Web Items on Desktop' and the white bg color should go away on your icons. As for running 1280x1024, I don't think the laptop monitor will support that resolution, but if it does, update your video card with the latest drivers and check if it will allow you to change the resolution, typically plug and play cards are set to 800 and 1024 by default.

edit: the native resolution for your laptop is probably 1280x768, try turning off multiple monitors and update all your drivers and hopefully that will work.

That looks like I have multiple monitors hooked up to the laptop, but I dont, and "lock web items on desktop" was already unchecked :\

Right click on your desktop, goto 'Properties' and the Display Properties Window will open. Click on the 'Desktop' tab, now click 'Customize Desktop' and the Desktop Items window will open. Click on the 'Web' tab, and uncheck 'Lock desktop items'. Click OK and it should be fixed. If it already was unchecked again... I have no idea why there would be a background color on your icons.

Now about your resolution, I really have no idea because I use nVidia and I don't know anything about ATI.

Chances are Walmart, your native resolution is 1024x768 (kind of odd for a laptop) and LCD screens can scale down but not scale up. Think of it this way: if your native resolution is indeed 1024x768 then your screen is 1024 pixels wide and 768 pixels tall and there is no way that it can fit a higher number of pixels (1280x1024) into that space (without some form of information loss).

Also, even if you could scale up to 1280x1024, it would look somewhat goofy because your screen would be designed for a 4:3 aspect ratio while 1280x1024 is a 5:4 aspect ratio.

Ah, I see, it only has that many pixels, so it would just be messed up if i somehow made it 1280x1024, thanx

I've run into that same icon problem before. Your wallpaper must be a PNG. Try using one that's a BMP or JPG instead.

nah its not the wallpaper, i had this happen to me before when i reformated my old comp... let me check up on it and il get back in amin
edit: try this
1. Open the Control Panel.
2. Double-click on the System icon.
3. In the System Properties window click the Advanced tab.
4. In Advanced click the Settings button under the Performance section.
5. In the Performance Options window scroll down to "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" and uncheck the option and click Ok.
6. Once completed you should no longer have the drop shadow.

As for it showing a dual monitor setting, laptops generally do because they are often hooked up to projectors or larger screens. There is probably a function button somewhere on your keyboard that switches your output automatically.
