Warning: OS Paged Pool Memory Low

What is this and what should I do about it. Sometimes it crashes my orange box games.

BTW i can play all the steam games except ep2, portal and tf2 at every video setting on highest but i gotta lower some stuff when play those.

I have never seen this error message but I can take a stab. Windows has "virtual memory" through the use of a PageFile. I think that it what the message is reffering to as paged memory. The pagefile is space on your hard drive that the operating system can treat as swapable memory (like your RAM) if it needs to, but it is slower than RAM.

One thing you can try is to right click my computer and go to proporties. then click the advanced tab, then click the first button called setting (i think) then at the bottom there should be another button called advanced again. This will bring you to where you can change your page file size. Check "manual page file size" and then type in something larger than what you are currently using. Such as 512 - 1024 or 1024 - 2048. Really the size depends on other factors.

I think GreenMonkey is on to something. Generally you want to set your pagefile size to at least 1 1/2 times the amount of RAM your system has.

This happens to me only after I've been doing several other RAM intensive activities before I go and play TF2. For example, Photoshop. All I have to do is restart my computer to make it go away but obviously that's just a stop-gap, not a long term solution like MaunaKea offered you.

BTW my page file is already 1.5x the size of my RAM, but I only have 512MB of it.

Also: I really dont check this that often - i really think that tech help and tech talk shoudl be linked to the same forums because now people will mis out on help because people liek me onyl check one site and also questions can get repeated. <--- my 2 cents.

2GB of RAM is almost a must for gaming these days. More has little effect with a 32 bit OS. Watch the sales at Best guy and you can usually max your maxhines memory out for not a lot of money.

The page file assesment is correct. Also you will see a performance increase if you make the minimum and maximum page file size equal and NOT let winodows dynamically change it. If you happen to have two hard disks put your page file on a drive seperate from your OS and game files.

If you have Windows XP there is a nice little memory manager utility you can get called FreeRAM XP Pro from www.download.com Keeps your machine running like it was just booted.

If you use Vista you REALLY want 2GB of ram. The windows ready boost feature gives a bit of a performance gain as well but you need a memory device equal to the size of your ram. Vista does seem to handle memory a little better than XP so I have not tried to find a memory manager yet.

One last tip.. before you go messing with your page file clean out your tempoaryay files and defrag your hard disk. If your page file gets fragmented it can slow you down.

This is an old post now, but the latest TF2 update contained a fix regarding "paged pool memory". I'm curious to know if you're still having this problem.

1) Open regedit (just type that into "run").

2) Navigate here: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

3) Double click "PagedPoolSize"

4) Click the radio button (thats what that thing is called right?) next to "decimal"

5) Change the value in the text box to 402653184

6) Reboot computer

7) Enjoy tf2 without having to download a program and run it every time you want to play.
