I thought about getting a nvidia 8600

Nah man spend the extra few bucks and get the new 8800GT... just launched today. Its faster than the 8800GTS and slightly slower than the GTX. You can buy it anywhere from like 230 - 270... heres one from MSI I found on buy.com for 239.99 (free ship):

I agree 100% with the spend a few extra bucks on the 8800 series. you will kick yourself later if you dont.

Saying the GT line is faster than the GTS is arguable. Bit faster core and memory clock don't make up for only having a 256bit interface IMO. Unless your computer actually has PCIe 2.0, then I'd stick with a GTS.

Of course, if your motherboard has PCIe 2.0, then the GT might be better in SLI. Though I think it might be a tossup which would bottleneck more, a half speed slot or a third slower memory interface.

Off topic, but Lafin... your sig makes my eyes hurt...
well lafinass I see your point but in like 85% of the games out there the GT is faster than the GTS... it has more stream processors 112 vs 96 (128 for GTX) at a higher clock speed 1500mhz vs 1200mhz (1350mhz GTX), higher core clock 600 vs 500 (575 for GTX) and same memory clock speed as the GTX... so theres plenty of performance in other areas than the 64bit difference in the memory interface. Plus the GTS 320mb version is the only card near the price of the 512mb GT and those are still $280 at the cheapest place vs $240 - $250 at most places for the GT.

I wish I knew more about the Nvidia side of graphics cards. I've always stuck with ATI because I've never had problems with them. If you're willing to pay that much for a vid card then yeah I'd say go with it. I'm running an x1950xt which I absolutely love, but it's not dx10 enabled. You're probably going to want that and I'm sure I'll end up upgrading to something similar to what you're looking at when Crysis comes out

Duality is right, the 8800 GT is the better buy. In games the memory bandwidth is not as important as some of the other factors.
Well it doesnt matter much now... the 8800GT is sold out almost everywhere online. The least expensive ones you can find are still a good buy but are around 290+. LoL no big deal apparently their coming out w/ a new version of the 8800GTS to launch when the ATI 3800 series does at the end of this month.
The new GTS will have the same 256-bit interface as the GT but will have the same stream processors as the current GTX (128) and will sport slightly higher memory and core clocks. There will be 512mb and 1GB versions (@ 256bit) instead of the 320/640mb 320bit versions... which actually will be cheaper.

Yeah, the coming months will be an excellent time to buy a new video card.
yeah i have the 8800 gts and even if its the slowest of that generation, i can play tf2 max everything including 16x AA with about 60 fps in big fights so yeah id go the extra mile and get a 8800 series nvidia
a good place to buy it if you live in canada is ncix.com, thats where i built/bought my beast
oh yeah and i can run crysis on high with a decent fps although it does jump every so often. probably background programs though. like, for alot of new games : crysis, cod4 (maybe), assasins creed, huxley, etcetc youll need beter hardware, so its best to just go for the current best and hang around with that for awhile
