I voted XP, but even if you go Vista- don't go 64-bit. We're years away from developers actually putting out 64-bit games and running a 32-bit game on a 64-bit system involves a layer of emulation between that just devours processor cycles. It's like putting 30 inch rims on a car with a 20 inch wheel well, you gotta sink a couple grand into raising the suspension to make it work and you just end up looking silly.

I voted for Vista. From a security perspective Vista is better as long as you don't mind granting applications permission to fart, and do everything else. It also looks very sexy. And as a TF2 gamer, you likely have a system capable of running Vista with no trouble. Over the next few years developers will learn to make their applications more "Vista aware", and as a result vista will become less annoying.

Lafinass is correct, do not go 64 bit, yet. I'd recommend the cheapest version you can get (home basic 32 bit). Vista Ultimate comes with many wonderful doohickeys, and MS doohickeys traditionally do three things: look pretty, cost a lot, and cause security issues.

Yeah I'm going with the 32-bit version of XP. The 64-bit just gives me problems with games and I'll probably wait on getting Vista until they come out with some service packs

Yeah... I got run over by Vista, so now I am back on XP. Don't get me wrong, Vista looks great and some nice features. But, as far as gaming, made most of my games unplayable by my standards. WoW worked fine though... go figure.

Again Vista bashing for no reason - and AGAIN UAC (giving permission) is an important part of windows that was not new in vista, it existed in XP. Only the cancle / allow part is new.

As far as the 64 / 32bit thing - WTF do you guys come up with this stuff? When you use 32bit applications in 64bit operating system it does one of two things - treats the other 32bits as zeros and takes no additional time, or it can pass two instructions per clock cycle. It depends on how the OS and chip maker decided to impliment it.

Thirdly - the onyl person I would ever reccomend to get vista basic is my grandma - who will only check here email. The premium version of vista is necessary for anyone who wants to do more than have a 50lb calculator. (or 3lb for your laptop guys). A simple tech help search on vista will probably result in you seeing that vista ultimate has the least problems.


That all being said - yes I am using 64bit Vista Ultimate, but I would tell people to keep XP, not upgrade to vista untill buying a new computer. (or never if you dont want its up to you). Also - some fo you who have intel processors are getting further boned because their early processors were 32bit and had 64bit extensins added, and then 64bit with 32bit extensions... yikes intell, just not as smooth with the transistion as AMD with their hybrid. After they got spanked they did make the core2 so props to them... eventually.

I am running XP Pro on my new custom machine. Yes, it could run Vista just great, but I really just don't have a desire to run Vista at all. I've tried it out, and it's just not my thing. If I ever change my mind, I can get Vista Business with no trouble at all, but I doubt that will happen.

Of course, I said the same thing about XP when it came out. So I guess it's just a matter of opinion. You will have better game performance in XP, unless you have a really good machine anyways. Then the difference would be marginal, and nothing you would notice.

definitly don't go w/vista. to much hardware and software incompatibilities rite now. not to mention it's way too buggy. if you're going to get vista i'd recommend waiting until a service pack comes out.

Run vista on two computers with no problems.
I did have 1 major issue at first where everything checked to be compatible, just not on the same board
So I had to buy a new systemboard because of it which then forced me to upgrade the video card (for the better). Stuff happens and I've had similar issues with other OSes (including Linux)

I still run XP MCE on the TV and I also have Server 2003. I can easily go back to XP on my gaming comp but choose not to because Vista works and have no intention on going back to XP, even if I build a new computer.

I'm using Vista Ultimate 64 bit, I really don't have any problems with drivers or anything. I'm pretty sure the source engine takes advantage of 64 bit, but correct me if I'm wrong.

ZomG dont get vista havnt you heard it erases your brains? Plus you have to give it permission to enter a password. I have neevr tried it myself but i knwo for a fact that my friend told me in studdy hall that he heard from this girl he knows that its bad for gamming. plus its so terrible xp ftw ftw yeah plus also i'm 5 years old.

Yeah, don't really see the big problem on Vista, really. I have it on my laptop, and it's fine now. I can wait for all the kinks to be worked out, but it's still not bad with that in mind.
