We all know and love our hats. But the New York Times(fancy shmancy newspaper) had an article (online at least) on tf2 in their fashion section.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/06/13/fashion/fire-when-ready-but-spare-my-hat.html?_r=0

Nothing in there struck me as odd, except:
"?One kid I played with said he spent his entire student-loan check trying to get nice hats,? Mr. Cass said. "

Really...Really? REALLY?!?!?

sigh...

“A 14-year-old I have in mind earned over $40,000 in his first year of hat sales,” Mr. Walker said.

this is the only line that got me it made me question what I was doing wrong

Sooooo, according to the article hats are found inside locked crates only (or at least this is what it appears he says)? And the hat market is now a 'gray' market? Could have sworn Valve put it up for the purpose of people using it to buy/sell/trade hats for other hats and whatnot...

Is there even such a thing as people verifying things before they write them nowadays?

It's the New York Times. You actually expect them to fact check?

True, but once upon a time a story like this would have either gotten a writer reprimanded by his editor-in-chief or fired.

Ah, the heydays of journalism...

Children, let's not hate on the journalists. There IS a gray market for hats. Steam market for hat trading barely even exists, and it's untested. The only market out there for hat trading is, by definition, gray.

Also, let us review grammar. This person made the statement "They are locked inside special crates." This statement is true, and it DOES NOT imply that this is the ONLY way of getting hats. You read that in yourself. More importantly, how many average readers of NYTimes Magazine know TF2 well enough to care. The point of this article is to explain a crazy trend that is interesting to read and will lead people to go.. "Whoa! That's crazy! I want to read the rest of this article!". It's not in-depth investigative journalism. *ANGER!!!!!* No, not really. Good find though.

this is a good example of what happens when you mix tf2 and real life, if that even exists.

“This is the only job I’ve ever had where I’ve gotten into an argument about 17th-century Prussian headwear,”

We all want this job.

The game of 'Real Life' is broken as hell. Until someone nerfs the lawyers and politicians, I refuse to play. The money farming/loot system also needs to be patched.

Tf2 is grand, though. All these hats.
