So the 7th generation of consoles is finally coming to an end. It's been a long one, eight years to be exact. So what have been your favorite games this generation? Or for PC only gamers, what have been your favorite games in the last 8 years?

Mine are:

10: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Before everything went bad, Call of Duty 4 was the game to beat this generation. It was unbelievably fun. I must have played the single player three or four times and dumped countless hours into the multiplayer. It was a benchmark for shooters this generation...unfortunately everybody, further iterations of Call of Duty included, sought to clone this game instead improve upon it.

Alternative Game: Red Orchestra 2, great multiplayer

9: Hotline Miami

Hotline Miami reminds me a lot of this old turn based games...except with the turn based part removed and the gameplay speed turned to 11. It's a confusing ultra violent adventure that focuses on trial and error gameplay. It's both demanding and addictive and it sports one of the best soundtracks in gaming.

Alternative Game: Dark Souls, more trial and error.

8: Mass Effect 2:

Another game that has been partially ruined by a sequel. Mass Effect 2, builds on the success of the first game while fixing a lot of its problems. The plot is kind of crap, but it serves as a decent frame work for building a team of memorable characters with interesting back stories. More importantly it's fun to play, if only Bioware was able give the series a satisfying ending then this would probably be ranked higher.

Alternative Game: Dragon Age: Origin, more team building more great gameplay, more mediocre sequel.

7. Mount & Blade: Warband:

I didn't know what to think of this game when I first played it. It looks terrible, it gives you next to zero direction on where to go...but I still played like 5 hours of it the first go around and then like 7 the next day. It's a time sink, build an army, fill your coffer, befriend nobles, fight wars, conquer everything. It's the games open ended progression that makes it irresistible, also the games boasts a massive mod scene. I haven't played the original, but I've been told that Warband is the way to go.

Alternative Game: Empire: Total War, more big battles.

6. Journey:

It's hard to explain Jouney, so I'm not going to both. If you have a PS3, they you need...and I mean NEED to buy Journey.

Alternative Game: Bastion, just another game you need to play.

5. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim:

Skyrim_zps17f71a91.png

Alternative Game: Fallout: New Vegas, time sink.

4. Red Dead Redemption:

Rockstar made a fantastic game with RDR. Weaves a fantastic story, that while at times is a little repetitive and redundant, is a great mediation on whether one can truly escape from their past. It's a theme that Rockstar has been on all generation from Niko Bellic and his story of revenge, to Max Payne and...well...everything he has ever done, and even Cole Phelps in the Rockstar produced LA Noire. What RDR does best though is craft a truly fantastic world with a massive amount to content to waste your time on.

Alternative Game: BioShock Infinite, another story about a man and his past.

3. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves:

This is it. The perfect action adventure game. No seriously, you're not going to find anything that comes close to this one. It actually should have been the 4th Indiana Jones film. Seriously, just release a lets play on the game on DVD and sell it as Indiana Jones 4... it would make me just that much happier.

Alternative Game: Farcry 3, more of a white protagonist shooting people in a foreign country.

2. Portal:

Hey, it's Portal everyone...

Alternative Game: Portal 2, more portal.

1. The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings:

It looks great, plays great, tells a great story, it's a great game. Play this game.

Alternative Game: S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, another eastern European PC game.

I guess order doesn't matter...

I still need to play The Last of Us, #3 could change if it's as good as I've heard.

I think Uncharted 2 is quite overrated, it's just Uncharted 1 but with prettier graphics and more action sequences (which are all done in CUT-SCENES mind you). The story and gameplay are both repetitive. Find a map to an artifact, go to the place, get mixed up with goons, get attacked by a pack of monsters, final showdown, the end. The gameplay is watch a cutscene, shoot people, jump and climb, rinse and repeat. Don't get me wrong Uncharted 2 is a great game, but its not the amazing generation defying sequel everyone is saying it is.

Yes Uncharted...like pretty much every other video game is repetitive, but that's beyond the point of this thread. What are your top 10 games for this generation

1. Skyrim
I don't really have to say much about skyrim, except that its great and will consume your life.

2. Arma 2/Day Z
I've played these games a lot of over the last year or so, and there so much fun. If I'm squadding it with a bunch of friends or running for my life from the hordes of undead and bandits.

3. Crusader Kings 2
This game should get far more praise then it does, Crusader kings is my most played game on steam with 210 hours, I just love this game everything about it is great, Its a grand stragey game from paradox interactive. Basicly you can be anyone from the medieval ages, count, duke, king or emperor. you basicly make your own goals and try to accomplish them. Don't take my word for it.

4. Eve Online
Best MMO period, its been around for more then 10 years now and when I first started playing it I didn't know what the heck I was doing... in truth I still don't. but now I fly big ships and go pew pew. in all seriousness tho its a steep learning curve but great overall game. No pay to win and you can use in-game currency to buy your monthly subscription. Also you literally can do anything in this game.

5. Grand Theft Auto 4
I put this game here because when it first came out I was glued to it for hours I love huge expansive games and the same could be said about assasins creed to some extent still a mark in this generation for a great game, good graphics and great times. :)

6. Battlefield 3
I haven't played bf3 as much as I should be but I love the maps and I'v been a fan of the series for a long time. I think that it did everything COD did but better.

7. Counter Strike Source/1.6/Go
Most Pc users have played CS at least a few times in there lifetime I mean I grew up playing this game and it deserves a spot on this list.

8. Starcraft 2
One of my favorite RTS of all times, I really don't have much to say about this other then its great and Korean teams scare the hell out of me.

9. Super Smash Bro's
I put this here because whenever a group of friends and I sit down and play this game we always have a great time bashing the hell out of each other with saberswords, Hammers and pokeballs.

10. LoL and DOTA
I don't really know much about these games considering I have never played them yet but I've seen videos and its a very popular game it also deserves a spot on this list.

So yeah this is my list and its in order, it was hard for me to place them considering there all great games. but these are the games that I think stepped it up and paved the way for better future games :D I love them all

You are definitely right. but as for a list of my top ten, I would have to give that a lot of thought. Check back on this thread for my list ;)

I've been thinking on this for 2 days and I've finally got a list I'm comfortable with. The numbering could be arguable but I've spent enough time on this lol. I am limiting my selections to console games only. Alright, here's my list. Enjoy!

#10 Splinter Cell: Conviction
Say what you want about the game, or how it streamlined off the path clearly carved by past itinerations, this game keeps going back in my 360 and I enjoy it. The deniable ops are tons of fun, I love redoing them and setting up different personal challenges, and they are still lots of fun to play co-op. Yeah it was different from the other Splinter Cell games, but I can't get enough of it, and don't get me wrong I enjoyed the other ones too.

#9 Rainbow 6: Las Vegas (1&2)
I bought an Xbox 360 for this game. This game and one other, which we'll get to further on the list. The tactical shooting in this game is amazing, challenging, and fun. The squad control is perfect, almost everything I've always wanted a Rainbow 6 game to be. If they could combine that squad control element with the precise planning you could do in past R6 games, you'd have the best shooter ever in my opinion. It probably wouldn't be console though.

#8 Battlefield Bad Company 2
I have nothing against CoD and its yearly releases, when it comes to shooters I ended up on the Battlefield side of things, plain and simple. A decent story (loved the end sequence), and it has the tried and true multiplayer that a BF game is known for. When I wasn't rebelling in the CS jail server or spending late nights on Ventrilo with a crew, I was playing this game.

#7 Bioshock
System Shock 2 was one of my favorite games as a young adult. When I heard there was a spiritual successor coming I knew it was going to be good, and Bioshock blew my mind. The first one was so well done, the story was amazing, the pacing in the game was well done. There are a few moments in this game that still stay in my mind as they first happened. If by some strange chance of fate you haven't played this game, would you kindly do so immediately? ;)

#6 Borderlands (Alternate Selection: Borderlands 2)
A role-playing shooter? It seems outlandish, and it seems just crazy enough to work. It sure was. I always had fun playing this with my room-mates, but I spent most of this game trudging through solo and I still had fun. I didn't need a spectacular story, I liked the quest system and the writing was devilishly clever. Borderlands 2 expanded and improved on the game in almost every way, and is a great example of a true sequel done right.

#5 Left 4 Dead 1&2
This game. Let me tell you about this game. I remember downloading the demo, taking my xbox 360 over to a buddies place, and I don't remember the rest of that weekend. I mean I do, but it was just the two of us playing this demo, having an amazing time. Add in the versus mode when the full game came out and you can bet I spent many nights enjoying the intricacies of this game. Personally I liked the original cast way more than the cast of LFD2, but gameplay was fun enough that it wasn't really a detriment.

#4 Red Dead Redemption
Cowboy GTA has never been more fun. Haha, just kidding. Seriously though, this game is a true gem. There isn't a single thing about it I don't like. Well actually, that's not true, but in the rare chance that there are people out there who haven't played it, I'm not sharing my disdain because it would be a major spoiler. Another game that will keep finding its way into my 360 for a weekend of MP raiding and shooting. Also recently finished the Night of the Living Dead DLC, and that was a solid addition. I say recently but it was probably 3 months ago, time flies.

#3 Assassin's Creed
Yes, I'm choosing the first one. This game was so unique when it came out. There really was nothing like it on the market. And yeah the series has evolved and you can argue all you want about how much better the second one was and blah blah blah. For me, the first one is the best one. There would be no second one without the first one. Even if I can't go back and play it now (old controls too clunky lol). The openness of the game, how you went about the missions, how you gathered information on your target through smaller side missions, I loved it. And yeah you can point out that they were repetitive, that they got annoying, I still loved it. There's something about the way the first one was done, and no other game in the series has quite captured it, I don't know if I can describe it. You plan out the mission and you could feel the tension as you'd get closer to your target. The game crafted each one to be great.
Alternate Selection: AC Brotherhood. Multiplayer is unique, and I've never had more fun playing any game's multiplayer mode. Also killed any interest I had in the story. I still play through them, but I don't enjoy it nearly as much. So I have a love/hate relationship with this series now.

#2 Oblivion (Alternate Selection: Skyrim)
Remember back at R6 Vegas how I said I bought a 360 for two games? This was the other one: Oblivion. I think we are so blown away by how amazing Skyrim is that we forget how amazing Oblivion was too. I've been an Elder Scrolls fan since Daggerfall, so this game was jaw dropping. The king killed in the intro? Crazy. There was a great story, lots of beautiful side quests, not to mention what usually gets me sandbox RPG games in this series: Exploring. You can blame Morrowind if you want, I often refuse to fast travel in Oblivion and Skyrim. I prefer to walk the routes myself and if I see an interesting cave/dungeon/grave, I abandon my quest and I go explore it. That is the draw of this game series to me, and it has never failed me. Skyrim took it to an amazing level and I have spent countless hours in it, but Oblivion has taken an equal amount of my time, no doubt. As did Morrowind, as did Daggerfall.

#1 Monster Hunter Tri
I can hear the groaning. I get it. This game is not popular in the Western Market, many people haven't tried it, or have and just can't get the hang of it and don't have the patience to figure it out. I do not condone them, I do not insult them, it's not for everyone. But for those that have taken the time to get to know and understand this game you know exactly what I'm talking about. The Monster Hunter series is incredible. It's a patient game, it takes time and effort. The game is rage inducing, but at the end of a hunt/quest, if there was any failure in it, you know that it was your fault and there is nothing else you can blame it on. You can't just go in weapons blazing. You can't go toe to toe, blow for blow with the monsters. They will destroy you. You have to learn the monsters, you have to learn how they move, you have to learn how they attack, you have to learn HOW to hunt them. Those that do learn the game and learn how to play it and play it well are rewarded with the most in-depth crafting system you'll ever find in a game. You craft everything you use in the game. Armor, weapons, potions, food, ammo (for bows or bowguns). The game is rich and deep and offers tons of gameplay. I sank over 200 hours into Monster Hunter Tri easily, and there were basically only 18 different "boss" monsters in this game. You can imagine how much fun I'm having with Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate, which increased that number to over 50. It is a punishing game, it is a difficult game, but it is a rewarding game. When you finally topple that monster you have been struggling with, the sense of accomplishment is like none other. It was a punishing game before Dark Souls made punishing games cool. Of all the games in the current console generation, it is by far my favorite.

Honorable Mentions:
Mario Kart Wii: Love Nintendo games that can be played with friends and family. Loved how this version of Mario Kart turned out
Smash Bros. Brawl: Same thought
Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1&2: Great gameplay, enjoyed both games thoroughly. Perfect mix of RP and action with a Marvel theme.

No one else has 10 games they like from the last 8 year, that they want to list in a hierarchical order of perceived quality? Strange, I could have sworn people liked making lists.

1. Guild Wars 2/Witcher 2
2. Guild Wars 2/Witcher 2 (tied for first)
3. Skyrim
4. Infamous one and two
5. Dynasty Warriors 7
6. Little Big planet 2

I don't think I could fill a top 10. But I will list the games I have been playing that have just come out and surprised me in how fun they were in the past 5 years.

(Most of these will be indy or low budget games because I figure all the big triple A titles will be posted by other people.)

1. Mount & Blade Warband... The game it self is very addicting and all the mods for the game are just INSANE.
It's kind of hard to explain what the game is about. Just like Beasty said. It is very open world, with building an army and trying to rule a fake land. With the mods you can go from a revolutionary war in the states to playing the game of thrones world...

2. Antichamber... It is a portal style game that will JUST BLOW YOUR MIND AWAY with its puzzles.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGsnm2nOnso[/ame]

3. Chivalry Medieval Warfare... Hands down best melee multiplayer game I have EVER played... Everything is so smooth and easy to handle the controls once you get them down.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEzfzis725k[/ame]

4. Faster Then Light... A Really well down strategy game that is a great way to kill an hour or two. Really wish I could port this to my phone.
[ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQ4FRcu_bjs[/ame]

5. X3 Terran Conflict/Albion Prelude... Imagine if Eve was single player is about the only way I could describe this game.
