Uploading videos takes forever

Hey guys, I'm trying to upload a video for you tube and its says it will take around 6 hours to upload.
The video is 6 minuets long.
The file format is mp4.
The size of it is 823 MB
And I have good internet connections.

So what can I do to shorten my upload time?

You are honestly screwed. Get a faster connection? You're pretty much trying to upload almost a gigabyte of data, which CAN take forever. You can try to compress the file into a smaller size without losing video or sound quality, which would help reduce the size fro 800+ down to maybe 350-400 MBs.

Can you give me a program name or some way to compress it so it won't take forever to upload.

I actually used Windows Live Movie Maker. I would open the original file and then resave it with the correct video savings and quality I want (usually 720p). You may want to check up on it, as it has been awhile since I last used it (gameplay videos of Tribe Ascend)

If you're recording gameplay I'd recommend getting Dxtory it's a nice program. There is a good high quality codec for it called Lagarith Lossless it's high quality but really small file size.

Thank you CaptBattlefield!!!!, Dxtroy is working very well for me. The standard codec it comes with is smaller then fraps and it doesn't lag when I record. I wish I had installed the codec as recommended before, but so far it is working fin. Is there a way for to find any other codecs that are better then Lagarith?

Are you uploading raw footage to YouTube? In which case, there's your issue.

Are you compressing the footage to MP4 in Windows Movie Maker? Another issue resolved.

My recommendation is using a better method of compression, especially if you have good enough hardware to rerender in moments time. I've previously rendered a 4 minute video down to 180MB at 720P, and this was a full fledge commentary with more action filled gameplay. It was in WMV format rather than MP4 however, but what I did to compensate for that was sharpen the video and add some contrast to it to deal with YouTube's processing.

The program I used is Sony Vegas Pro 11/8. Doesn't matter which one tbh.

Yea, when it comes to YouTube, 1080p to 720p makes almost no difference. That, and my monitors resolution is 1366x768, so I can't play 1080p.

It looks like you're squared away with altering file size to help with the time it takes you to upload to Youtube. On the subject of upload speed, that is determined by your current service agreement. Your service provider is selling the download / upload speed package as is and the only way to increase your upload speed is to contact your service provider and upgrade your internet package. I haven't seen any providers allow you to solely increase your upload speed so you will need to upgrade (pay more money woohoo) your internet should that be the solution you want.

Yea, when it comes to YouTube, 1080p to 720p makes almost no difference. That, and my monitors resolution is 1366x768, so I can't play 1080p.

Yes, I was using Windows Movie Maker to compress the video (Not gonna do tht again).
Would nay sony vegas work for compressing videos? Like SV 8 or 9?

Install xvid http://www.xvid.org/

Then use Virtualdub to compress things with the xvid codec

I would like to say, thanks. You guys really did help me out. This basically cut down my time from 330 minuets to 66 minuets. A vast improvement.

You're welcome, as for the codecs I use lagarith lossless and then render the video into .WMV 720p @ 29.97fps using Sony Vegas Pro. Using those render settings I've cut giant file sized videos into quick to upload high quality videos. 1080p isn't really necessary unless you're all about quality.

(In which case I would recommend getting a higher upload speed.)

This. If you decide to go further with your rendering clone, then I cannot recommend Sony Vegas enough due to the wide range of render settings and stuff

I use Sony Vegas Pro 9 and I toyed with settings a bit until I found what I think is the best quality/size settings.

I Set all projects to have an aspect ratio set at HDV 720p@24fps (16:9, perfect for youtube)

and I render my projects out into WMV V11, 4.8MBps @ 720p (24fps)


The result is a small file and still in glorious 720p HD
