Hey hey,

I can imagine that most people here got a PC and not a mac, but since I do a lot of graphic design stuff I might want to buy a mac.

Im just wondering if there are any Mac users here, and if they could tell me if mac is really beter for designing and maybe for others things. And why that actually is.

Thanks,

Bird :)

I read the title of this thread thinking that this was going to turn into a heated argument.

Hopefully not.

Don't know too much about graphic design but I doubt that Macs would be any worse or better than a PC for graphic design.

I have a mac for school and I must say that I find it better for video editing (imovie is actually really easy to learn and use), graphic design, and other work related things are much easier on a mac in my opinion. But I stick to my PC for games.

originally, the MAC was designed for cad drafting... though you CAN game on one, I find that mac is more suited to an office type atmosphere.

Thanks for your reaction, but why is it beter for graphic design and work related stuff? What makes it beter?

The only reason why people find the Mac better for that kind of stuff is because its built-in programs (Imovie, Iphoto, ect.) are a lot nicer than the ones built-in to windows. But you can still download programs for windows that are much better than the built-in ones on mac. People run around saying mac is better for music/art because they have bought into Apple's marketing.

Buying a mac for its built-in programs is like buying a car because it has a really nice built-in GPS, there are a lot of other things that should factor into your decision, such as the engine or the processor. Besides, you can always add on a really nice GPS for a hundred bucks.

PCs always have better parts than Macs at equivalent price points because with Macs you pay for both the brand name and the really high end finishes and looks of the mac. Sure the PC might look a little rougher, but its better than the high end all-leather platinum-ed out SUV trying to drive on a motorcycle engine (the mac).

Think of the PC as a nice, reliable jeep and the Mac as a giant Hummer trying to drive on a V4. Sure it looks nice and might turn a few heads, but the PC gets the job done a lot better (and a lot cheaper.)

Thanks for your reply. But if that's the only reason, then why do all graphic design studios on earth use mac? Shouldnt there be more that made that happen?

People buy into the hype. My Aunt is a painter and she decided she had to have a mac because all of her artsy friends use a mac. All she ever uses the god damn thing for is email and storing family photos!!! She would have been fine with a $500 PC but instead she gets to cart around her cool-looking $1000+ mac.

Alright that might be the reason, still doubting if there isnt actually anything else. Thanks a lot tho:)

I didn't really want to post because my mom always told me, if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. Having said that, I agree with Chili dude 110% on all of his posts.

Mac = cool looking overpriced status symbol

Reasons why a mac may be better for design:

1. Rumour has it adobe products are optimized to work better on OS X.
2. High quality screens. The screens you get on all Mac's at high resolution and stunning, so its VERY easy to work with.
3. Well built products. Easy to move around.
4. OS X tends to crash less on a whole compared to Windows, so you're less likely to lose work in a random crash

1. Ehhhh
2. Buy a nice screen.
3. You can buy well-built pcs too. If you want something thin and lightweight like a mac, look at the ultrabooks.
4. I'm on windows 7 and I never crash. My moms mac crashed a lot and later the hard drive was recalled. You can't say macs are that much better. Part of why macs may crash less overall is that pcs will sell very cheap computers that are more prone to crashing due to bad hardware, versus apple won't go into the sub $700 market with its laptops.

I use a macbook air in my private life and working life. I work a lot with cad drawings in my field of work. And I enjoy working on it, And i find that the cad program I'm working on is way easier to use than using the same program on a windows operating system. One thing that helps a lot is that i am able to use gestures. I usually draw parts 4 engines and feed them into a cnc cutter or other types of machinery besides this i work a lot with pictures and movies. But only as a hobby thing you know with holiday pictures or movies. Now i used to be a big windows man... And as a gamer most people usually have a big argument every time you discuss this. My opinion about this is that people should try it before you criticize it. And thats why i decided to buy one and try it out myself. And let me say i do not regret my purchase. So wether or not you buy one that is up to you. Just be prepared people will argue with you almost every time you take you're laptop out of the bag. I hope this helped a bit

Remember most people thats calling everything apple makes crap, docent know what they are talking about since all they've done is look at the specs on the back of the box and look at the price tag. Most of the things that makes a mac great is the software and user friendliness not hardware.

You should be first looking at what applications are best suited for your needs. It's all about the programs. Then get the platform that supports that.

Shopping for the computer platform first is like buying a car for your moving business, before deciding what type of moving business you want. If you buy the VW bug cause it is stylish and looks cool, you might be limited to just delivering flowers. If you want to move couches, get a pickup truck. If you want to move more and larger things, getting a cargo truck offers more flexibility.

I never called Apple crap and I definitely know what I am talking about. I support 400 design engineers(Windows) and two marketing/communication people(Mac). In an average year, they have just as many, if not more problems than the average Windows user. Microsoft keeping XP around so long helped Apple a lot. With Windows 7, Apple cannot claim that OSX is more efficient or reliable anymore. In terms of price vs performance, reliability and support the choice between Apple and PC isn't even close. However, if you want a cool looking status symbol, there's really only one choice.

Also, most Windows 8 laptops have touchpads that support multi-touch and gestures.

It's funny how people who have never really used anything but Windows and PC's love to complain about how overpriced, underpowered, etc a Mac is.

The fact is it is more expensive than a common PC. A Mercedes is also more expensive than a KIA. You can't really perform an apples to apples comparison between the two. Some people are satisfied with the KIA and others want the luxury of the Mercedes.

If Mac's really were as bad as everyone likes to make out do you really think they would sell so well? Anyone can go to Walmart and pick up an eMachine or a Dell for a few hundred dollars.

Another thing to keep in mind is the Mac comes with the ability (BootCamp) to boot Windows in addition to the native OS X (Unix). This lets you have a fallback to Windows for gaming, specialized applications, etc.

I play on an iMac with a 3.4ghz Core i7, 16GB of RAM, AMD Radeon 6970 with 1GB of VRAM, and a 27" 2560x1440 IPS LCD.

Geezer, I don't know if your response is aimed at me but a Mac is not underpowered or overpowered when compared to a PC. It's all been the same hardware since Mac switched from PowerPC to Intel. And a Mac is not bad at all, it's just over priced. And your comparison between a Benz and a Kia is not entirely accurate. It would be more like buying a Benz with a Honda motor for 100k or a Honda with a Honda motor for 40k. Again, there's nothing bad about a Mac. However the price is too high for what you get. While those aesthetics are nice, they do not justify twice the price, in my opinion.

As someone who used Mac computer's my whole life, I can tell you I prefer PC's. People may say Macs are great for X or Y, but in the end they are still just computer's. Almost every Mac I had would experience the same thing, ~2 years in it would start to slow down, and the speed would never be what it once was. On my current Windows 7 Laptop, I have almost the same speed i had on day 1, almost 4 years ago. In my opinion, Apple Computers have almost nothing to offer. I love CAD on windows, Image and Video manipulation on Windows is no harder than on a Mac in my opinion. The real deal breaker in my opinion though is how helpless you can be as a Mac owner, many times if something goes wrong, and yes things go wrong, the only recourse is to take it to an Apple Store. It is possible to buy the tools to open up a Mac, but I wouldn't know where to begin on that. There is so much information out there for trouble shooting a PC, and I never bet on a zero-problem computer.

As for my computer history... I had pre- iMac macs, as in big beige squares, then i had an iMac, then i did a Mac Pro, then the new iMac that is just one big screen.
The first PC i had was an Dell with XP, i got it to play games that weren't compatible with Mac. It wasn't very special, however when I decided to switch full PC I bought a Toshiba Qosmio Gaming Laptop. It was 1500$ on Newegg, and it has been by far the best computing experience of my life, At the time I bought the laptop, Mac didn't even have a comparable platform, and their most powerful laptop would have cost 1000$ more at least. Almost 4 years later and my laptop is still chugging along.

Does it matter whether you buy a Mac or PC? No, but when you are on a budget, I put my money on PCs.

just go into the store and try it out for a bit and make youre own opinions on what you like or not the thing is our opnions may not be like yours so best thing to do is to go in to a store and try one out and c for youre self wether or not you like it i know u wont get so much covered in and hour or so but still.
