Finally got an avatar. Its the first one i've made so its not the best. I cut a soldier out and resized it, so nothing too glamorous. I'm just happy that i have one now, my posts looked so loney without one.

since i'm a noob and don;t have photoshop, i use just used MS paint. I had a screen shot of a soldier with that look so i used the pencil to outline him (very tedious work) then i cut him out the screenie. Next i opened a new paint and pasted it. Finally I went to image and resized it till it fit the forums.
As i said all i used was paint so my options on stuff were limited.

You can save it as any standard image format, be that jpeg, gif, png, bmp or anything else. The thing you must take into consideration is that different formats will have different levels of quality, and the level of quality is proportional to the amount of space the image will take up on a computer. A png format image will take up more space on a computer, but will also preserve a higher level of quality.
Many times on forums they will limit (along with the dimensions of the image) the amount of space the image file can take up on the server. So it is just a matter of maximizing the quality of the image, while not going over the limit for the amount of space taken up.
