A Windows 8.1 beta review

This just reassures me that Microsoft is becoming a dead horse... Sad really, I enjoyed XP and 7 a lot. I fear for it's future :/
 
Honestly the only redeeming part of this beta is the fact you don't have to pay for a start menu button app.

I find find classic shell to be much better. But anyway for everyone that dislikes windows 8, have you even tried it? It has better networking that linux, and it is very minimalistic. So why not make the switch? Windows 8 enterprise even comes with bitlocker... and since truecrypt isn't safe anymore bitlocker seems like it's great. As for game support the drivers at least for me on my 660ti seem to be very stable as well as with my amd laptop with an a8 in it.

Because 99.9% of current games are not optimized or wont be optimized for Windows 8, rendering it useless for a gamer in a gaming community.

I think you're wrong. I run all the games I ran on Windows 7 with Windows 8 with the same performance. I have had no issues, except for Minecraft in like the first week of Windows 8, but it was fixed very quickly.

... Well maybe a lot about the networking but...

The performance issues are nonexistent.

I have a 660ti and a phenom II x6 1110T with 8gb of ram and I can run Arma 3 on high with some settings ultra on a 1920 x 1080 and still run a second monitor. I've also done a lot of benchmarks and never really noticed any difference from windows 7 to 8.

What games do you run? Because some games clearly state on the steam store that they have not been optimized for Windows 7 and might cause issues. Lots of games have that, actually.

And you got to look at it from a consumer stand point. Not a gamer stand point.

If you are a consumer looking to purchase windows 8 and play a couple games here and there and arent super into PC gaming they are instantly turned off as when you visit stores and look at the back of the game cases it clearly states the computer specs that are recommended are generally windows vista and 7.

1 persons success with games does not rule out hundreds if not thousands of other peoples fails with it. You are obviously more tech savvy then normal and casual gamers. Most of the people in the tech threads are. I highly doubt the average gamers who just likes to game would be turned off by windows 8 because of what I have stated above and the -possible- failures it could cause if you want to play some fun and older games.

Vindictus, MapleStory (LOL), BioShock, BioShock Infinite, Borderlands, Borderlands 2, COD4, Alan Wake, Ace of Spades, Alan Wake's American Nightmare, Assassin's Creed Revelations, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Batman: Arkham Asylum GOTY, BFBC2, BF3, Dead Space 2, MW3, CSS, CSGO, TF2, Crysis 2, RO2, HL2, Trine, Saints Row: The Third are just a few of some of the games I've tried that work on Windows 8. I don't have enough time to list them all right now, but I think you're getting the idea.
 
Actually it turns out that in benchmarks, Windows 8 is just slightly better than Windows 7 in most games.

That was an extremely biased review. He harps on things that don't effect the integrity of the OS at all. They're cosmetic and are liked/disliked on a person to person basis.

I have yet to play a game that hasn't worked on Win 8. The operating system is completely fine. It's just a question of whether or not you like chocolate ice cream or vanilla ice cream.

It looks like this guy just writes about popular Google searches and then creates a dramatic review/story to generate ad revenue. I don't see any professionalism or credentials validating his opinion.

I personally think tomshardware is a terrible site to use in general. It gives one person point of view and not multiple peoples perspectives.

You guys are looking at it from long term gamer stand points. As I said before, Most games that they sell at best buy and other stores alike will say recommended for windows 7 and that will turn any casual, not a hardcore (like everyone in eGO) away from windows 8. I classify a casual gamer who gets on maybe once a week every now and then to relax and generally doesnt bother with communities like these.

Some of their benchmark stuff are fine on tomshardware, but every other time I read reviews its just one person perspective and not giving a real consumer point of view. Everyone here is obviously more tech savvy then the normal human being. Which in turn proves my point. Once Microsoft starts getting Game developers to tailor their games to their new OS I will buy a new hard drive and install it onto my computer. Until they fix bugs and glitches with most of the OS then I will stick with Windows 7. Graphics and CPU usage are not the only issues with playing a game on a new OS that it was not tailored for.

Edit: Disregard what I have said before.

The article is clearly labeled for a more gamer oriented enthusiast and not a guy who just plays games once every so often. You guys are going all around the points I made in my first post. They arent doing any good for a normal consumer until they start making windows 8 more marketable like windows 7 was.
