...IF they do this right, and fully deliver on their promises, this could reinvent or at least seriously improve upon the MMO wheel. [Link]
Let's look at this in a nutshell. Some of the slated features that excite me the most about Next (again, these are just promises at this point)...
*Allows the entire playerbase access to "Landmark," a custom content creation tool that mashes the world of Everquest into the capacity for customization of Minecraft (Ever wanted to add onto your chainmail bikini or tunnel to Hell? Go for it!)
*A full release of a polished game, launching as Free-to-Play in the next year with the Landmark tool available Winter 2013 (Presumably so we can start working on giant monuments of naked people so they're ready by the time the game launches.)
*FULLY DESTRUCTIBLE WORLDS able to be deformed to the most basic levels, from smashing through walling to shattering a fortress to blowing apart the very environment you fight in. (BRB, rolling the Kool-Aid Troll.)
*Action-oriented combat -- they're supposedly much less reliant on hotkeys this time about and combat will be much more mobile and intensive. (Time to start getting a training music montage ready.)
Now, assuming they CAN deliver on most or all of this? This could be AWESOME. It'd be kind of amusing if it was an Everquest game that reinvented the wheel of the MMO genre after EQ1 helped kickstart its progression. For now, we'll have to wait and see for more concrete evidence!
