Portable College Rig

I have undergone a project for a portable gaming and game development computer to lug off to college next year. I knew I needed something that could be both powerful and portable -- for hauling back and forth between college and home on breaks, but to also drag to a friend's dorm for lan parties. This is what I have come up with so far, and I was curious if anyone had suggestions, or was thinking about doing the same thing.

Current build...
CPU: AMD FX 8350 Octacore 4GHz processor
Cooler: CoolerMaster 212 evo
Mobo: Asus M5A78L-M mATX AM3+ motherboard
GPU: ATI Radeon HD 7970
PSU: Rosewill HIVE 650 watt PSU
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 2x4GB DDR3-1600 RAM
Case: NZXT Crafted Series Vulcan

I did not include optical drives, HDDs or SSDs as I personally have my own sitting around and won't be buying new ones for a while.

So what do you guys think? Suggestions? Are any of you guys moving off to college next year and looking for similar builds? :w00t:
 
What's your budget? Are you overclocking? What country do you live in? What is your case preference?
 
~$700. Probably. USA. Case preference is NXZT Vulcan, anything small. Looking into scrapping this and going with another build though atm.
 
What is the bigger priority? Portability or Performance? I ask because if portability is first, then this is the rare case I would say you want to figure out and pick the case out first, and THEN figure out the rest. If its performance with an eye towards portability, then figuring out the hardware first, and then picking out the case would be the way to do it.

I looked at the Vulcan; I have to admit, I can see how it would be great for portability, but the design and look of it is actually a turnoff for me; it looks fugly to me. But appearances is always in the eye of the beholder.

Not only is the vulcan fugly, it doesn't have any front panel USB 3.0 (only 2.0).

A little bit of mod work and you can have a 2 USB 3.0 ports on the front of the rig in one of the external drive slots.

As if I could afford to buy new USB 3.0 peripherals after I build this, anyway.
