TF2 BSOD

Well, I've managed to get the game to start successfully twice in the last 3 days. I'm not sure why those two times, but every other time I get a BSOD with DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and a stop code of D1, but no associated file causing the exception.

It's JUST TF2. All my other games, including all my other Source games, run without a hitch. But with TF2, I never even get to the loading screen.

I've tried...

Rolling back every driver I can think of.
Updating every driver to the newest.
Resetting my Pagefile.
Disabling all of my peripherals.
Updating my BIOS.

And several other things that are slipping my mind.

But until I find a resolution, I'm not likely to be on much.

well w/out any parameters (ie. x00000000c, x000000034 ect..) its hard to say what you need to update or what hotfix you should D/L.... could be 1 of a million different drivers, system or registry files that are causing the error.

Stop 0x000000D1 (0x00000000, 0x00000002, 0x00000008, 0x00000000)


Also, memtest passed.

From what I've found, the D1 stop error is most often associated with A) Bad Drivers B) Bad RAM C) Corrupt Pagefile.

All of which I have checked.

And I'm amazed that HL2 and Portal both work fine, when they're running the same engine as TF2.

Oh, tried deleting the local files and re-installing TF2.

well man looks like you covered every base I can think of right now short of a complete reformat (which absolutely sucks and I personally wouldnt do haha)... w/out that file after the DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL its pretty tough cause the parameters you gave are also coming up as default/blank....

And it is odd that only tf2 is doing it even after reinstall and your comp passed memtest, what about prime95 just to make sure there arent any performace issues?... If I can think of something I'll post it up. Otherwise good luck.

I've got a fairly smoking computer and the two times TF2 ran, it ran as it always does- 100-150FPS.

I've had individual games wonk out on me before, but in this case the other Source games really should be tanked.

First time I've had a game consistently BSOD though, very odd.

Also the first BSOD I've ever had that didn't give me the associated .sys, .dll, etc. that caused it.

i remember reading about your beast but i dont know if you mentioned any overclock? You have done basically everything i would do other than reinstalling the drivers with driver cleaner and running a registry cleaner after uninstalling tf2 to clear out any rogue entries before reinstalling. and maybe bump the system speed down a notch and see if it BSOD's

Was overclocked, I reset all of the voltages and speeds to stock.

I always use a driver cleaner when changing drivers. I usually use Xtreme-G drivers, but I swapped them over to stock drivers- even tried some older ones.

I did not however clean the registry after uninstalling TF2. I'll have to poke about in the registry and see what entries it lays down.


Edit: I also tried running the game in OpenGL, same BSOD.

Well, it's definitely software related. I booted up my Vista drive and it runs fine.

I'll have to try a full steam uninstall later.

Unfortunately, I have no minidump- my pagefile is kept on a drive seperate from my OS and XP won't do a dump if the pagefile isn't on the same drive.

Well, it's no longer being consistent.

It now seems (and I have no idea what I did to achieve this) to be able to start TF2 once per boot as long as it is the first game to have been played since booting the machine. So whatever it is doing to BSOD on me, involves a change that is made to my system when a game is played. Like it's flipping a toggle.

could it be a hard drive going out? have you run checkdisk to see if there are any corrupted files?

Priority Saver - A neat little program I used when one of my games needed to be in high priority and I got tired of setting it every time. I can tentatively say that I have geek slapped the BSOD and have successfully started TF2 three times in a row.

So far.

Installed that program more than 6 months ago, odd that it would freak out on me now and just with TF2. I'll have to re-download COD4 and poke at you with my machine gun.
