Upgrade Questions

I built my current rig exactly 4 years ago (October 2009).

It's time to look into doing the "normal" upgrade stuff.

I don't pay attention to "new hardware", so I have NO idea what's really relevant with the computer parts anymore. So, I need help in designing one.


Below are my current specs.

  • AMD Phenom II X4 940 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM2+ 125W Quad-Core Black Edition
  • ASUS M4N82 Deluxe AM3/AM2+/AM2 NVIDIA nForce 980a SLI AMD Motherboard
  • GeForce GTX 560 Ti
  • G.SKILL 8GB (4 x 2GB)
  • PSU - Antec CP-850 850W Continuous Power CPX SLI Certified

I have a full tower case, so room won't be an issue. The power supply should be ok also.

budget
I don't have a fixed budget, but I'm not interested in spending a fortune. If the performance is worth the price, I don't mind buying it..but I would just as soon as drop down a peg or two. Biggest bang for the buck, you know?

so, what would y'all recommend? What motherboard/CPU/memory combination?
 
Why upgrade when your computer is still better than 75% of the gaming computers out there? The 560Ti can run any game right now on max settings (or at least for me it can.) and I have the Phenom X4 955 black edition and still run everything fine. What are you playing 90% of the time?

I mostly play the CoD franchise.

I know my rig will run the new Ghost, but probably just on the "basic" or "low".

I kind of like having the eye candy and spiffy details in the graphics.
 
Maybe a new Vid Card?

Ghost minimum is GTS 450/HD5870.

Find a black friday deal, but honestly I think your rig stacks up pretty well.

Your graphics card should be able to run the game on high to ultra settings. You really shouldnt have any issues but if you're looking to spend some cash on a new video card then get a 7990 or a 7970. They are super cheap right now due to AMD's new R9 series being released that challenges the Nvidia Titan for the top card at half the price of the titan. If you really want a new video card then look for cards around the 250-350$ range. I personally would not worry about upgrading the card as I have the 560Ti as well and I have ran every game so far on ultra settings. Battlefield 4 was the only one I could not which I ran on high. Not ultra.

Ghost isn't going to be that graphics intensive.

If being literal, I take that as likely as Republicans and Democrats singing campfire songs together in front of the media.

Your CPU is in the middle end of the rankings right now. Doesn't mean it's bad or anything, but there are higher-spec CPUs available. Whether you should go for an upgrade now is debatable.

The same can be said of your CPU; it's right in the middle of the rankings. I'm guessing four years ago when you had this one built, you bought the best of the best, or upper tier of all the cards available. You can honestly expect to keep running on this setup for another 2 years, I believe, before you need to seriously upgrade. Again, there are better cards and chips out there, but it's up to your decision if the higher cost for only so much improvement is worth your money.
