That's exactly what I needed to know......but doesn't that defeat the purpose of the device? lol. I mean smart tvs have apps and things that chromecast allows you to do anyways right?

or is there something different about chromecast idk?

I don't have a smart TV, and you don't need a smart TV to use it. I don't know where you got this from.

And I dispute the idea you need to have a smart TV. Chromecast is about making a "dumb" tv a Smart TV. Why would you buy Chromecast when you have a Smart TV that already does the same thing? Yes, there's certain reasons and situations where you would want this for a Smart TV, but again, you do NOT have to have a Smart TV to USE it! You only need to have a compatible HDMI port on your TV to use it!

2) turn your tv to wifi.
3) watch it on your tv.

right? so if your tv has the ability to connect to a wireless internet..chances are its a smart tv? because my tv sure cant access my wireless internet.

so if im misunderstanding this, please let me know.

You stick the Chromecast into your TV, which is then optimized using a tablet, phone, or PC. The dongle itself acts as a Wi-Fi dongle (like the ones you would plug into a USB for a desktop to use wireless Internet). That's the most important feature of what Chromecast does; it gives your TV access to your Internet connection.

No Chromecast goes into your tv. What I don't understand is how it connects. I do know the main port is HDMI for it to connect to, but I've seen pictures that make it look like there is another end that is supposed to connect into a usb port on the tv as well. Which I don't think my tv has a usb port...just HDMI.

It only connects through HDMI. The USB port is just for power. It comes with a power brick if your TV doesn't have a USB port.

We have 2 Roku players and love them. I've also gotten Roku players for my parents and my sister. If you want to stream to your TV this is the simplest way I've found to do it. My 6 year old and 4 year old can get into Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, etc. and pick out what they want to watch on their own. That right there tells you how simple it is since my 4 year old can't even read.

I have a roku player as well. So chromecast wouldn't be any or much different? That's what I wasn't sure about. I love my roku player!

The only thing that I see it having that Roku doesn't is the Google Play store. If you have a lot of content on that, then this may be appealing. Everything else that they say it does, Roku does. And, if you have stuff on the Google Play store that you just can't live without you can always use Plex to stream it from your computer to your Roku...

The thing is that it's WAY cheaper and does 1080p.

Right so if you don't have a roku player its almost non-sense to skip out on it. I have a roku player that works perfectly, BUT i only have one roku player. This thing only being 35 bucks sounds kinda worth it to have an extra one versus trying to buy another roku player.

The only things I would use a roku for are things that the Chromecast does, so a Chromecast is perfect for me. It may not be perfect for you.

Another cool and cheap device I have connected to my TV is the Micca Speck - I plug my USB drive into it and it can play pretty much any media file on it in HD.

It's tiny and I can bring it anywhere if I want to play a movie on my friend's TV from my USB drive.
