SB X-Fi Xtreme Audio Issues

Heya guys, I did all the googling I could and I am having no luck with this one...

I picked up a new sound card from Best Buy the other day, it's a Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio, and it seems nice enough, except for three little problems I'm having.

First, and most importantly, the microphone port does not work. Basically, the jack it goes in (on the back panel, more on front panel jack later in this post) is a multipurpose jack, that accepts digital i/o, and also has line in/mic mode. I've made sure my volumes are correct and have done everything I can find to do to make the mic work, but alas, there is no success. I am stumped on this one now.

Second, for audio out in the first out port (2.1 speaker setup), there is only sound coming out the right side. Cable is alright and speakers are alright, the sound card is just not putting out Right-Side audio. Again, I have checked balance/volume levels on this one and am having absolutely no luck. By the way, the front audio jack does the same thing as the back.

Third, the front MIC port, when plugged in, causes the sound out (front and back) to start making a bunch of noise, and it drops all of the actual sound out. There is just a lot of squealing which continues until I mute and then unmute the volume. The sound continues even after you remove the mic.

I honestly don't know what to do about these issues. What sound there is, I love. It sounds much better than onboard. But these issues are bugging me and I can find nothing on Creative's site or anywhere on the internet about them. :-(

Thanks in advance!

It's hard to tell if this is a software or hardware problem without messing with it more. From the sounds of it though, my initial guess would be that it is a hardware issue. There might be a bad or loose connection somewhere that is causing these issues. I'd recommend taking the card back and getting a new one.

I've already had a thing where the computer wouldn't even see it plugged in, so I moved it to a different PCI slot. However, I have no other PCI slots to try switching it to.

I may just go swap it for an Audigy card later today.

You do have the drivers and software installed for it, correct?

And you DID disable your old onboard sounddevice, correct?

Hmm... try removing the soundcard, uninstalling the software, restarting... loading up with no sound device (is possible)... shut down.. restart... put the card back in... restart.... install software... and see if that helps. Or, if you have any friends, try putting it in their towers and see if it has the same issue. Might just be DOA.
