Which phone would be better to get. My whole family is swithcing to smart phones (finally) although my mother already had a iphone 4.

Which phone is better for:

My younger sister who is 11, myself who is 17 and my parents.

I've done some research and have found the 5s is better than the galaxy with the new processor and has a better battery life, but also cost a bunch more. The 5c is only 100$ and is basically the same phone without the new processor and fingerprint scanning?

I personally would rather have an iphone, because in my opinion it's easier to use because im so used to it.

What do you guys think?

In my opinion the Galaxy S4 is a better phone in terms of durability, I've dropped mine several times and there's barely a scratch. Also if you like customizing your OS with themes and what not, then you're better off with the Galaxy S4 or other Android devices since Apple doesn't allow that. But it all depends on what you're looking for in a phone, both phones have there pros and cons

And I assume that you base this on similar experiences dropping iPhones?

I've dropped by 5c quite a bit, and it shows no wear. Honestly, if you just need a phone, try and get a deal on a 5c. If you want something flashy, go with the 5s. Not missing way too much if you go with the 5c.

I have experience with many generations of iPhones, and personally own a Galaxy S3. Now to be perfectly honest, for normal, layman use, there isn't a difference really between the iPhone 5s/5c and a Galaxy s4, they are both really good phones.

The Main advantage the Galaxy has is that, because it is android, it is less restrictive. There are apps that you can get for an Android that Apple doesn't allow on their app-store.

However, unless the above advantage is super important to you, then there really isn't a huge difference. Go out to a phone store, play with the various models, find which one feels better in your hand, which seems more intuitive (just because you are familiar with a previous model doesn't mean it might not be easier to use a different phone).

And remember, even if you make the wrong choice, everything will be obsolete by next year! (maybe 2 years max if you get a contract without the ability to replace the phone).

Okay, you don't want the Galaxy. You want the iPhone. Why? It's simple.

The software on the Galaxy S4 blows. No, Android doesn't blow. The S4 blows. The Samsung skin (Touchwiz) is really laggy and choppy, riddled with poor design.

So if you buy an Android phone it shouldn't be the S4, which is a poor choice. Since the S4 is the only Android choice on your palette you should buy the iPhone.

Oh, and you're going to want the extra speed the 5S affords you in 1.5 years when you're still stuck on your contract.

5S

5C/5S depending on what they do with their phones

No, but I have friends with iPhones and the screen on the iPhone gets cracked easily, maybe not so much the body of it since it's made of anodized aluminum, but the screens aren't nearly as durable as those on Samsung and Motorola phones. I could be wrong if Apple has started using different materials for their screens though

I like the galaxy s just for the simple fact Iphone keeps upgrading there phone but there screens never get any bigger.

They should be the same in all honestly. The Galaxies and iPhones both use the same thing on the front-Corning Gorilla Glass.

Pick them both up and get the one that feels more comfortable after 5 minutes. You mentioned that you're more used to the iPhone, so I'd suggest that one. I'd suggest that you all get similar phones for the simple fact that you'll be able to help each other figure them out.

That being said, I love my Galaxy S3. The knock on TouchWiz is popular on the Internet, but I have no lag and haven't noticed any real bugs. I've had it since the week it released, so I don't expect any to pop up now. I have used and repaired most brands of smart phone both personally and professionally. For 99% of the people out there it comes down to preference. There are the occasional power users that need a specific app/feature that is only available on a specific phone. If you fall into this category you'll usually know it. Everything else is fanboyism.

My $.02. YMMV

Touchwiz seems fine until you compare it to stock android or iOS.

As I said, I have used and repaired most brands and models. I have read and heard about a lot of problems with Touchwiz. I have not seen any more problems with Touchwiz than any other version of Android or iOS. I have not noticed any problems on my Galaxy S3. YMMV

Yeah, I did some research comparing the 2 phones last night, and i apologize for stating the S4 is more durable. It looks like Apple has improved significantly since the first iPhone and the 5S seems like a decent phone. But it all comes down to what you're used to and which feels more comfortable in your hands

The Iphone 5c is just the first iphone 5 but in a plastic case (dont get just get the nicer iphone 5 original)

The Iphone 5s has a 64x architecture processor, it might be supported longer due to that imo, but not a fan of ios personally.

The Samsung Galaxy S4, I just bought my mom this phone as I have a Galaxy Note 2. The S4 has a really good camera at 13mp, an abundance of features, and can be customized and rooted fairly easily. Only down side is that the S5 could be coming soon.

Sure the S4 rocks a 13mp camera but it is all about the lens, not the mp. In my opinion the 5s takes more quality of photos then the S4, plus a better panorama and slow motion video capture which never gets old. I also don;t like the size of the S4. It is too bulky for me. i am sure I would have gotten used to it eventually but it just seemed a bit much. With most posts on here its all preference. Aside from video games, I am indeed an apple person. Not crazy psycho but I just think their products are very simple to use, always work, and are just better quality. I am also not a fan how Android phones come with all these apps that you don't use but cannot get rid of unless you root it. End of rant.

It isn't going to make a big difference.

+1. It isn't about the megapixels, but IMO the S4 and iPhone cameras are neck and neck.
