Here, at EdgeGamers, we begin 2014 and everything is fresh and new. How do you like the new look? Have you made a resolution yet? Just in case you haven't, I have one for you. I, [insert your moniker here], resolve to get involved. Find something in which you can make a difference and step up. Participate. It may be in eGO, it may be in your family, or it may be in a friend's life. Try to find some way you can make the world a better place. At the end of the day, you should have something which you can look back on and say with pride, "I did that." If you look at our six gaming divisions and keep an eye on the trends, you will find a common theme: let's make this better. What are you waiting for? Let's make this better.

Benchley, Bombeck, Royko all had one thing in common; they could write. Can you? If you are an eGO member and you want to write or edit for EdgeGamers, we would be glad to review your application. Send a pm to Quaffer or wewo. We're looking for reporters and editors, but fair warning, we do not accept everyone.

This months newsletter was edited by Blaze, PBJ, and wewo. Please thank them for their efforts.

Our art this month was provided by Trippey. A great start for a new year.

We encourage you to listen to eGO podcasts at http://podcast.egoadmins.com/

Welcome to 2014, fellow gamers. JayJay here, your reporter from the land down under. What a year we've just left behind! Since it was big news (and still is, to some extent) I thought I’d share some background info on the two newest consoles that hit our market.

Let’s start with the PlayStation 4. Not knowing much about this console firsthand, I’ve elected to refer to the hundreds of reviews available on the Internet. Sony announced in early 2013 that it would be releasing a successor to the popular PlayStation 3. Using a more common AMD processor, Sony hoped to attract a broad range of developers to support the project. I could ramble on about the technical specs, but that would be like trying to convince you that I speak five languages. All I’ll say is this:

  • The PS4 is still sporting a Blu-Ray player;
  • Sony has used an Orbis OS;
  • The CPU is a custom 8-core AMD processor;
  • The storage capacity of the hard drive is a still-useful 500GB;
  • Memory hasn’t changed much, with 8GB under the hood; and
  • The system uses a custom AMD Radeon GPU to render the graphics.

No PS4 games will be region-locked nor will there be DRM measures in place to restrict the resale of games. Much like Steam, Sony has said that any game a user has purchased can be accessed at any time, on any system, through the PlayStation Store.

Now for the contender -- XBox One. The XBox One uses a Blu-Ray drive that can also play CDs and DVDs. The system makes use of three OSes: an OS based on Windows, XBox OS, and an OS that will allow the two to interact. The CPU is a custom 1.75GHz AMD 8-core APU. The storage and memory allotment match those of the PS4. For graphics, Microsoft has also chosen to go with an AMD Radeon GPU.

Now for my favorite topic, controversy. Microsoft has a habit of implementing DRM, and the XBox One is no exception. The bulk of the controversy surrounding the XBox One is not limited to the DRM, however, but also extends to the Kinect Sensor. Reports have said that in order for the console to operate the Kinect system must also be running. There are privacy concerns over this as the data collected by Kinect could be used as an advertising tool (among the least reprehensible and invasive ways the data could be abused). The Kinect system monitors a player's eye movement, heart rate, and mood, as well as the number of people in the room. This collection effort has been dubbed an “intrusion of personal privacy”. This form of data collecting is currently being challenged in court and is part of an ongoing battle between large corporations and privacy advocates. Microsoft may revise the project later by having users opt-in to allow such data collecting.

While not owning either console means I can’t tell you of the user experience firsthand, you can expect that console owners will post their opinions and experiences in one of our forums. Browse them and other reviews on the Internet and decide which console, if any, will best suit your needs and wants. I wish you all a great start in this new year.

Game on.

Another year in the past and another fresh start ahead. 2013 held a handful of remarkable alterations for the PSC, including the creation of its very own events program and multiple leadership changes. We also gained many new PSC members, so we hope they all agree that 2013 was a great year for us. But now, it is time we move into the future, and take a look at what 2014 has in store for us.

PSC leadership has been working on various additions, one being an attempt to get its members more involved. As much as we want to share information on these revelations, there are still changes being made to them. Don’t let that get you down, though; you’ll be seeing some of these changes before you know it.

What is one thing that happens every New Year in eGO? Each division announces their pick for the Member of the Year in their division. If you haven’t already, check out the front page for the list of all divisional picks; and yes, the PSC pick is included.

One special event is not listed on the front page, however. This is the promotion of a hard-working member to the PSC, and it comes as no surprise to those who have seen the dedication of our newest Trainer, imak! Please congratulate him on his new position when you get the chance.

We like to see members get more involved within the community, and we would like for all admins (eG or eGO) to apply for the PSC if they feel they would be interested. The application template and all the needed contacts can be found in eG Private. Even if you’ve been here since the beginning, we would still like to have you. Your name would look great on the PSC Roster, so get your applications submitted today!

That’s all for this month. We hope you enjoy the New Year -- we know we will.

Gained 20 pounds? Ate ten turkeys and three hams? Got a lot of presents? Met some awkward family members? Such is the way of the holidays and January's CS article is focused on some very special people...the same kind of people who read newsletter articles.

If you haven't noticed yet, Christy did a lot of hard work making plugins for our Holiday Gift Hustle. Players in our CS servers, collected the gifts that dropped, and the top people, determined by the number of gifts they obtained, won free neat stuff.

M1 Garands click, Panzerschreck rockets whiz through the air, and a .30 caliber machine gun lays down cover fire. Running toward a flag, rows of troops are mowed down, but finally they overcome the enemy and capture the point by using age-old flanking techniques. If not for the setting, I'd swear this game is no different than Battlefield 4.

Despite a gap of over 80 years between the battles in Day of Defeat: Source and those in Battlefield 4, a strong camaraderie has grown between the divisions reaching back to the days of Bad Company 2, the foundation of the Battlefield Division. After some intense rounds of Battlefield with Meg and a few others from the Day of Defeat Division earlier in the month, I decided to once again try my hand at their home division's game after a hiatus of several months.

I had forgotten just how much fun the eight-year-old game could be. Even after seven years, eGO maintains six servers for Day of Defeat: Source, and they make us proud.

During the first five minutes on Avalanche, I remembered all too quickly my failing points in the world of DoD. Old habits die hard, and my Battlefield instincts were of little to no value. Instead of spotting enemies, "Q" was switching to my previous weapon. Time after time I jumped from a high perch, only to forget that I didn't have a parachute as my face smashed into the ground and the respawn timer began its countdown. After a bit, I caught my bearings and picked up the Assault class. Whether Battlefield or Day of Defeat, it's my baby, and things began to look up for me.

Notwithstanding the annoying differences (and an error in my admin setup), I was still having a blast. At 2:15 a.m. on a Sunday morning, I was giggling like a three-year-old at the rag-doll physics and my own failures. Now, we all get a case of the early-morning sillies from time to time, but this was pure enjoyment. Want my advice? Head over to the Steam Store and pick up Day of Defeat: Source. Even if you absolutely hate the gameplay itself, you'll get a look at eGO's roots and have a laugh while you're at it.

In the midst of all this fun, the division would like to take a heartfelt moment to wish its former Division Leader, Blue Stealth, a fond farewell. After five years with eGO, he has chosen to hang up his tags in favor of real-life pursuits in his field, and we wish him good luck in all his future endeavors. To read his sincere, inspiring letter of resignation in its entirety, go here.

War has come to Minecraft! With the reset on December 22nd MC has introduced a Factions world. Factions has three sub-worlds:

Factions World
Factions Nether
Factions End

The factions have had a week to build up their claimed territories with a few simple ground rules: No griefing or other behavior contrary to EdgeGamers policies. No claims are allowed in the center 500 blocks. This is a war zone -- and it may have a higher drop rate of ores and loot. Factions may not surround areas with LWC locked doors/hatches/blocks to prevent entry. No raids were allowed for the first week. For more details and an interesting discussion data-mine the Minecraft division threads.

Events should be starting soon.

The faction maps are all about teamwork. There is no safety except in numbers, so choose your faction and get to work.
