recording software question

anyone know of recording software that is good has/better than fraps? fraps takes up way to much memory ;-;

Unfortunately fraps I would say is the best one out there, but other recommendations could be:

Bandicam
Dxtory
Camtastia
Hypercam (for screen recording, but not for game recording)

A way to cut down the memory is by putting it in some sort of editing program like Windows Movie Maker, or maybe iMovie depending on what computer you have.

I use Dxtory, it's not free though. It's way better than FRAPS because it has many customization options.

It's better with memory but worse with hard drive space but that's mainly due to the codecs you use, you can use a codec that creates a smaller file but compressing that small file takes up memory resources. I play in 1080p but scale down recordings to 720p for the simple reason of saving hard drive space.

The standard Dxtory codec was troublesome for me, it made my Premier Elements 10 crash. So I went for the Lagarith Lossless Codec, but as I said it gives you HUUUGE files. It's almost 1 Gig per Minute. A 4m45 long video takes up 4.09GB.

What convinced me with Dxtory was it's ability to allow me to stream gameplay (to Twitch or Youtube Live) with it in addition to recording.

But you're maybe not interested in that extra functionality

I recommend Dxtory using the lagarith lossless codec, also if you can I'd pair it with Virtual Audio Cable. You can use dxtory and VAC to split Teamspeak & or Ventrilo/skype sound without muting the game audio and your mic.

I had some issues with VAC, I found it to be unreliable. Alot of robo-voice audio and static/noise issues and I'd had to restart it or even the entire PC.

Anyway, I still have VAC installed for back up (and hey, I paid for it) but I also use the VB-Audio Virtual Cable and VB-Audio Virtual Cable A-B.

Good thing about VB-Audio Cables is that they are free, but unlike VAC, you just get the 3 cables (which is good enough for me).

In Vent, you were previously able to specify a sound device for voice and a separate sound device for things like "xxx has entered your channel" text to voice messages. I used to have a separate audio track for that, but it doesn't seem like TS3 has that functionality to assign a separate audio device for those messages..

*I just noticed I still have that cable named VENT, I changed it to COMS to be more neutral.

I was going to recommend this. I believe you have to have a 600+ card though.

Dxtory all the way the software is 10 times better than fraps. I agree that maybe 5-10 years ago fraps was the king not so much anymore. Dxtory only costs like 15-20bucks not that bad of a price for something so amazing
