Off Topic Anime question. I loved the series Star Blazers back in the mid '80s. It was on weekday mornings on a San Fran station. I didn't know until recently that it was just two dubbed and edited seasons of Space Battleship Yamato. So, that show is first on my list to start watching.

I am not much for Nurato (my wife and I called it 'Nerd-toe' to around my youngest son because he really hated that) and the like, but would like to watch more like Space Battleship Yamato. I also liked and have on DVD, Hellsing. Just looking for some recommendations.

There have been a lot of anime threads lately. While this is the anime division, this is not the place.

Moved to anime/manga discussion forum. You'll get better advice there anyways :)

What exactly are you looking for genre wise? If you give something more specific, it would be easier to give you anime closer to what you are looking for. I will just throw out a few genres and some anime inside them.

Action: Shingeki no Kyojin, Code Geass, Black Laggon, Fate/Stay Night(Fate/Zero as well).

Romance/Drama: Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo, Angel Beats!, Toradora!, Kaichou wa Maid-sama, The World God Only Knows.

Fantasy/Supernatural: Shakugan no Shana, Zero no Tsukaima, Kaze no Stigma, Sword Art Online, Devil Survivor 2 The Animation, Log Horizon.

Slice of Life/School Life: Love Live! School Idol Project, Boku wa Tomodachi ga Sukunai, Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate, Minami-ke.

Mystery/Psychological: Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, Kami-sama no memo-chou, Hyouka, Danganronpa, Mawaru Penguindrum (might mess with your head a bit).

Comedy: Hataraku Maou-sama, Blood Lad, Yuru Yuri, Tamako Market.

Adventure: Hunter x Hunter (I would recommend the 2011 version), Fairy Tail, Eureka Seven.

SciFi, Action, Fantasy/Supernatural, Psychological - the darker the better. I would sooner dish my eyes out with a dull spoon before watching Romance/Drama/Real Life. In the non-anime media, I range from most SciFi (Star Wars/Trek, Firefly, but not much for Babylon 5/Star Gate) to fantasy and darker end-times/graphic novel stuff like Constantine and the ilk. I have been told by most friends that i would enjoy Dr Who, but just can't get into it. Also, anti-super heros, Watchmen, V for Vendetta, etc.

Hmmm, from your preferences I would recommend Death Note, Elfen Lied, Gantz.

A personal favorite of mine would be the Kara no Kyoukai movie series. Unfortunately, it was not very popular in the US, so finding the dvds is hard, but it's an amazing series. If you ever get the chance, I recommend watching it a million times over.

Higurashi. I've watched the series enough time. It's dark, depressing, a bit pathetic at points (from a character standpoint). It sits in my top 3 series for a reason. Stay away from the OVA(kira). It's a 4 episode fanservice ova.
They're also trying to do a reboot in movie form. The movie (outbreak) is animated by the same company that did kira, but it works for some reason.

Thanks, I will put that on the list after I watch the entire Space Battleship Yamato series. Not sure why you suggest I stay away from eggs, but ok....

I say stay away because it's beyond stupid. Higurashi no naku koro ni/kai/rei sets up this fantastic story that overlaps itself(it's based off a VN and it really shows just keep plowing through it). It's dark and depressing with an ending in kai and rei that is oh so satisfying.
And then this happens:

Seriously. It's terrible. Entertaining, but absolutely terrible.

For Psychological: Paranoia Agent, Perfect Blue, and Paprika (all of these are directed by Satoshi Kon)
Welcome to the NHK is good as well, but romance is a large part of it. If you do decide to pick it up, I recommend the novel over the anime.

For SciFi: Ghost in the Shell and Psycho-Pass

I don't see why it wouldn't work. Studio Deen made every season of Higurashi afaik

I was thinking along the lines that Kira was very colorful and cheery while the rest of the series had a darker color to it. Nothing against the animation crew.

the darker the better.

If you want dark, Shiki is also a good one. It really makes you think about what it means to be human and how devastating racism and prejudice can be. I will say, it does not have a happy ending, middle, or even beginning. It's also a pretty good mystery on top of that, so it's one of my favorites.

Also good:
Death Note
Fate/Zero (prequal to Fate/Stay Night. If you like Zero, then you should wait on Stay Night as they are remaking it right now)
Shinsekai Yori
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (Don't judge by the title, this is not a typical magical girl anime)
