I was playing at 2fort earlier, and I always ran into a spy who came into our base undisguised. Everytime I spotted him, he was always undisguised, so I asked him:

"Why don't you ever disguise?"

His response:

"What's the point?"

Quite frankly, I have to agree. Since people are constantly spy checking their team, why should you ever disguise as the enemy unless you intend on distracting medics or sapping engineer sentries? Sure, you have occurrences where teams don't spy check, but most people are caught within seconds, especially when playing offense on Dustbowl and Gravel Pit.

I just want to get your opinions on spies and their disguising.

I've had to limit my time with enemy teams to 2-3 seconds before I either stab and cloak, or run. Between the people who get lucky with random shots, and the people who spy check constantly, I get caught immediately, even when I'm acting exactly like a person on their team.

I agree with DrMarvin42, not everyone checks. And unless you have one person constantly checking, it only takes about 5 - 10 seconds for a good spy to wreck havoc on a defensive nut, and if the major push is launched immediately afterwards, it is nuts =)

So, I think cloaking does good, but just for a little bit

If you've got a team that's particularly paranoid, you should either stop spying or focus your efforts elsewhere. On 2fort, spying isn't exactly the best. On Dustbowl or Gravel Pit, however, if you're good at what you do, you can get away with a good 5 kills in a row, and maybe taking a few sentries and dispensers down with you.

Cloaking and disguising have their advantages. Even if the enemy KNOWS you're a spy, or suspects it and starts shooting at you, disguises will fool sentries into ignoring you, or will confuse other enemies that may have joined in on the fight and ended your life quicker.

A lone spy against an encampment of engineers and pyros won't live long. But he can still win the round if he runs out just ahead of a push with either a Heavy, Pyro, Soldier, or Demo on ubercharge. Sapped sentries are a lot easier to take out when ubered, and in the confusion of having a gigantic glowing man with a minigun jump out at you, most engineers won't fix everything or will run for cover, just giving in to the inevitability of the ubercharge. I've seen several engineers not realize their dispenser was sapped (and subsequently destroyed) and continuing to pound away at their rapidly deteriorating sentry gun without any metal.

I'm not disputing the skills of anyone posting here, but I often see people say "How did you know I was a spy?"
Other than that blue glow around your feet when you took the teleporter, your insistence on bumping into people while trying to get behind them, and those sappers magically appearing wherever you look? Yeah, I wonder what could've given you away.

It's easy to spot a spy is going for a backstab because he's going straight for a person. So when they're doing that yeah it's obvious. What I'll do sometimes is go sniper as a spy, and do that corner sniper thing. You know where you get next to a wall and move side to side as a sniper, then when someone passes by I'll stab them. Obviously you have to do this on their side of the map for it to be effective. Sometimes when I'm medic one of my teammates is runs by me with full life to my base and yelling, medic! Then I know to check if he is a spy. What fools me is when one of my guys is HURT and runs TO ME yelling medic, then then it turns out it's a spy and kills me. So far, I haven't ubered an enemy though !lol

I like to chuck on a disguise as it's hardly labourious, and it's worth it even if you fool an enemy for ONE second that's more time than undisguised. It also stops sg's gunning you down.

Disguising gives you a chance to kill people, thats why you should disguise..and as The S Inspector said, it is not that hard..especially if you write a script to do it for you.

Tips for being a spy are:

1. Never use the teleporter, you will instantly be seen by the trail you leave behind.
2. Don't pick a class like Scout and mysteriously wait right next to and Engineer to sap then backstab. You will be found out instantly. Try being another engineer, or something defensive.
3. Always make sure that you have a full bar of cloak because you never know when you will get into a tricky situation and need to hide.
4. Wait a second after cloaking to become fully invisible.
5. Don't bump into people while being cloaked, you will be seen. (Always try to manuever around everyone)
6. Get to a safe, undisclosed place to uncloak, not infront of the enemy's base.
7. Do not backstab someone in a huge crowd, unless you have a nice escape plan.

And Finally:

8. Get good with the pistol, it can seperate the good spies from the bad ones.

Now on to the topic, that person who walks into your base undisguised has some problems. Your disguise is your best friend as a spy.

lately my spy abilities have gotten real good. Im getting better at anticipating the enemy team. My reflexes for taking out a sentry and engineer in one go has increased. Im better at slipping past the enemy and staying away from pyros. So you all better watch out cause if your a snipin im gonna ram this knife so far down your backs that ill have collected your spines on a stick.

Well I use spy to get by sentries and if im lucky people. When i see the other team i turn a corner go cloaked and i get back to where i was going. But near a pyro i just run and stabb!

take it from me i mean cmon i always play spy even when theres 4 people in i play no other person i usually cloak as a friendly pyro so i usually dont get shot but after i staby stab some people i cloak as a demo and sit and wait i mean noone is ganna check the demo :)

but always take out that stupid medic so he dont bonesaw u :P hate it when they do that.

the reason im never spy is because of the spy checks, once every few minutes a pyro would just burt out his flames for the fun of it.
i have to admit though it does take alot of skill to be good with the spy.

HAHAHAHAHAHA love this thread!

Im gonna say two things AND ONLY TWO THINGS!
1:That spy your talking about booster, he needs more spy school!
2:Looks like some of you that are trying to be a spy are giving up, don't quit, theres a lot more than you think to spying!

On a side note: i have my bad days sometimes, don't let that discourage you from playing a spy, one you got it, its really fun!

Was that 3...?

i spy check all the time whenever im a pyro lol and 75% of the time i end up burning a spy some where and yeah its true some times people dont check for spies and the spies get a really good round

1. You can use the teleporter, just don't run into the enemy base. Sometimes it's quicker to take the tele, then wait out the trail.
7. If you backstab a medic with a full uber, then instantly get killed, i think its worth it.
Other than that, awesome points.
