"CPU Fan Error"

When I start up my computer around 75% of the time it will go to a black screen with the BIOS logo (American Megatrends) where it says "CPU Fan Error".

The thing is, there isn't actually anything wrong with my CPU Fan as far as I can tell. It lets me boot into my OS if I press F1 to get into the Setup menu and then boot from my SSD manually to game or use the internet or whatever. And sometimes, this just doesn't happen at all.

Mobo: Asus P8P67 (latest revision), latest BIOS

Does anyone have any ideas?

I had an asus board do this before when starting in does fan rpm check and fan has not got above low rpm level for warning...
if your fan is working good other wise just go into bios,
there is an option to turn off halts on error for F1 just disable and it wont bother you again....
just as a side note just check every so often that fan is still working so if it does strop working
it wont cook the cpu.. i just kept an eye on the fan and it worked fine for years

Bad advice. Do not disable the halts. This is good advice if you want to spend some money on new parts. As he even clearly pointed out he cooked his cpu...


Have you tried connecting your CPU fan into a new fan connector nearby on the motherboard? Sometimes it could just be the connection is loose.

Possibly try taking an industrial air compressor and blowing out all dust around the fan. Be careful not to damage it with the air compressor though.

Have you tried other CPU fans and ended up with the same error? Your fan might be going bad and I would probably suggest taking off your heat sink and cleaning it thoroughly and re-apply thermal paste and put the fan and heat sink back on.

If none of this works, I would pick up a new heat sink. Although it might look like it is completely fine, there could be an issue with the fan that is causing it not to spin up most of the time which will give you the issue. So long as the CPU fan error is the only one you're getting, it can either be your CPU fans connector on the motherboard or the fan itself. Thankfully, it doesnt sound like a motherboard problem.

actually no i didnt cook the cpu no where did i even remotely say that i did i advised to watch to make sure his fan does not stop working..
on a side note i have been a Tech for over 35 years and have never fried a cpu i keep close eye on systems i build and people that buy my systems
very seldom have issues and when they do its because of some thing they did with the OS not the system i built..

It sounded like he said he cooked his CPU.

Regardless, Telling someone to turn off a warning sign after being a computer tech for so long doesnt seem like very much help in the "Tech Help" sub-forum.
