Avatar upload?

At the risk of sounding like a total moron, I'm asking for help. Other than uploading a picture somewhere and linking to it, is there a way to specify an avatar? Can we directly upload it to the server or does it have to be an image hosted elsewhere and linked to? After you all giggle at me, let me know and . . . thanks!

Well, just to give you an answer, I would say it would have to be uploaded elsewhere, then linked to.

Photobucket is easy to setup and use.
