As you can see, everyone's opinion will vary and people will speak solely based on preference.
I have seen many cases that were completely custom designed and put together by enthusiasts; cases that were built/modified in a workshop, and cases that look like what _Sushi said above: "like they were grafted out of a fast and furious movie" (e.g.
car lovers who use custom tuners as inspiration), and most of them looked superb and fantastic.
I personally like all of the above and won't knock anyone for what they like.
The fact remains that everyone has their own personal preference, and anyone who says "my opinion is the only one that matters" are people you need not even pay attention to.
There are people who will say "I don't like it" (legitimate negative feedback) and then there are people who will say "It sucks" (naysayers/haters). You will always have the naysayers, and they will always try to tell you that what you have or are doing isn't good enough, and they'll try to convince you that their opinion is absolutely detrimental; You have to remember, the vast majority of this "online gaming organization", as well as the entire online video gaming world, is made up of children (under the age of 18) and very immature young adults, each who think they know everything, are almost always pessimistic and negative (naysayers), and think that their opinion is the only one that matters. Fear not, there are many of us who are both aged and seasoned. Maturity comes in experience, experience comes with time, and time equals age.
Remember also that a lot of people are cowards, regardless of age, and that, just like on a highway full of traffic, they will never say what they're willing to say over the internet, or while they're in their vehicle, when they know that there's a great risk for them in doing so - such as being face to face with you and getting their jaw shattered as deserved, or worse.
Accept the positive and the negative, but forget the naysayers. Don't take them personally, and don't even respond to them. We all know that they're very immature and/or cowards and that's plenty enough to grin about for all of us.
Real PC Enthusiasts, just like real car enthusiasts (including the "Fast and Furious" types - even though car/street-racing enthusiasts have been around for a lot longer than even the very first Fast and Furious movie, a movie that was created by using car/street-racing enthusiasts as inspiration), are generally individuals who have a lot of
experience in their craft. Real enthusiasts also don't care what other people's opinions are, their focus is solely on what they're doing, and doing what they like.
BLUF: If you're a real enthusiast, you will put everything into what you're doing and you will make it something that
YOU like, and that's all that matters. Also remember that if you like it, someone else is bound to.
When you treat your setup as an art, and are so passionate that you put everything into it, that is how you will make it into the

I don't care if it "looks like it was grafted out of a Fast and Furious movie", or if it's a custom case design made completely out of bamboo and you replace LED lights and visual effects with candles and flowers; Forget what everyone else thinks, do what YOU like, and remember that the only opinion that matters is yours.
TL;DR: Do whatever it is that you like, forget everyone else's opinion, but my tip stands: Think about how you want your first impression to be, and go with that.
Either way you go, those of us who actually take an interest in this subject will see what you're doing and will give you our feedback regardless.
